culinarc Posted August 27, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2014 We will be cruising on the Norwegian Breakaway. NCL posted an arrival time at 8 AM on a Sunday. Will a 12:40 flight at JFK be doable? Thanks for the help! Should be no problem. I live close to JFK and I am usually home between 10:30 and 11am.
njhorseman Posted August 27, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 27, 2014 (edited) 12:40 is very tight...I would book something after 1 pm. Getting home (near JFK) by 11 am means the equivalent of arriving at JFK at 11 am, and I would never arrive at the airport only 1 hour 40 minutes before a flight. Who knows how long check in and TSA lines will be on that day. 12:40 for LGA is fine...for JFK way too tight for comfort. Jillbu Posted August 27, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 27, 2014 We walked off Splendor at 8am, grabbed a taxi to Grand Central right across from the pier, hopped on the 8:10 local to Stamford and were in Stamford being picked up by 9:30. Yes we has FTTF so that May have given us an extra 15 mins. Sent from my iPad using Forums
Rare mking8288 Posted August 27, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 27, 2014 Is that JFK departure a domestic flight as oversea/international flight would be a definite "no" with virtually zero margins for any delays (BA was delayed once by nearly 4 to 5 hours when it "collided" with a whale in the NY harbor or waterways ... ) Does OP have Priority Disembarkation status with NCL? There're been stories of (unconfirmed, not seen personally while sailing the BA) seemingly 1,000 pax using the "Express Self Walkoff" program to be among the first off the ship on arrival & cleared to go. There's the transportaion logistics of beating other cruisers to the yellow taxi line (most typically, across 12th Avenue) and/or meeting with the car service (Carmel or Dial7, etc.) and the ride to JFK (45 to 90 minutes, varying depending on weather-traffic-road conditions & closures, etc.) The most obvious highway to JFK via the tolled QMT to LIE Expwy (Queens Midtown Tunnel) or longer/faster tolled RJK Bridge to Grand Central Pkwy is often bottlenecked at the Van Wyck Expy due to ongoing long-term highway reconstructions (ongoing for last 15+ years, URRRH) & can be a frustrating commute with the check-in cutoff clock ticking. If OP is traveling with light carry-ons and hand luggage, and can NAVIGATE the trains, it's possible to take a shorter taxi ride to NY Penn Station, then catch the LIRR train (on a reduced Sunday schedule) for a 20+ minutes ride to Jamaica, then upstairs to the AirTrain to JFK's terminals, assuming that AT is running & not using shuttle buses due to maintenance - which can be, usually, reliable done in about 75 to 90 minutes once you are OUTSIDE the terminal and not delayed by CBP. Depending on the airlines, invoking the flat-tire rules meant that they COULD put you on a standby list for a later/next day flight, which is NOT good if you are making a connection to the final destination with the carrier. Airlines priced their fares according to departure time on a given day (JetBlue comes to mind at JFK) so you will be paying more for a later flight, but it can be money wisely spent. Alas, there's no easy or simple answer. If OP wish to share, please provide more specific details & we can look at the options & see whether it's worth taking chances for ... On our recent BA cruise, we're off the gangway with Priority Disembark @ 8:40 AM, our luggages were inside the terminal @ Pier 90 - ready & waiting - and hop into a yellow taxi, and home in NE Queens by 9:30 AM, 15 minutes past LGA (would've been at JFK before 10 AM on "that" morning only.) We typically don't plan on nor actually getting home until about 10:30 to 11:30 AM as we're never in a hurry with our leisure disembarkation mode. cruising oceangal Posted August 27, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted August 27, 2014 Thanks everyone for the help! mking8288, it is a domestic flight with no connections. This is our first time on NCL so I didn't know if NCL was like other lines that let you walk off with your luggage. We decided to pay a little more and book a later flight, no need to get stressed out after vacation!
