Can you tell guest services to not allow you to overdraft your S&S account?

Can you tell guest services at the beginning of the cruise to not allow you to overdraft your S&S account? I was surprised when a friend was allowed to go over $1000 on his S&S account when it was a cash account.

On our first cruise we used cash on our account they called us to Guest Services when we were running low. Have just used the credit card since that cruise. Surprised that they would let someone go over especially that much unless it was some kind of computer glitch.

You mean a computer glitch at the customer's bank. Or they had overdraft protection tied to another account or bank credit card.

You can ask, but there is no guarantee. A better option might be to check your balance occasionally at one the convenient kiosks. That's very easy to do.

How much cash had he put down on his account? And if he knew it was a cash account why did he not keep track of his own spending?

You don't say whether you are going to use a cc or do a cash account. I know that when we sail with our children we put a limit on what they are allowed to charge and then it won't let them charge any more, so I would think they could do that.

Are you able to set a separate limit for your child using cash or must you use a credit card?

He put down $4000 cash the first day and they let him go over by that much at the casino and his card wasn't locked until he woke up the next morning. Guess he had too many drinks and didn't keep track.

Did you witness any of this or is this something you were told? I can't believe they would allow this.

I it is set by Sail and Sign card - i know with my kids, I give the two older ones a certain limit and the two younger ones can't use it for charging - at least that is how it has worked in the past.

I can see that happening if they didn't run his card until after he was done, in which case there's no way to keep from overdrafting the SS account. I know that the drink waiters who walk around with a tray just write the number down, so there's always a way to overdraft it.

Sadly, there's no way to stop that.

It definitely happened because I witnessed him get the letter to contact guest services and pay it off.

I agree but I find it amazing they let a cash account go over at all, even $10.

The way their system is set up its either let you overdraft it, or eat the cost, no way they'd eat the cost or everyone would try to do it with the waiters who walk around poolside.

That must have been a glitch -- we have used cash the past several cruises, and were always advised when we were out of cash on the account. Normally they freeze the card until you deposit some more.

We always use cash account as well and have had the same experience as above.

A couple of years ago (can't remember what cruise line)as we were waiting to debark we overheard a couple complaining about this very same thing.

Apparently they had gone over their cash deposit by several hundred dollars and were saying the ship should just "eat it" because it was the ships fault...not their's...guest services knew how much money they had and shouldn't have let them spend more.

The carry-ons this couple had had "just married" tags on them so just guessing this must have been their honeymoon. With that kind of reasoning I don't see a bright financial future for these two.

Why would anyone put down $4000 in cash for a sign and sail account? That seems very high. Not only that, then they go over by $1000 and not know it, nor carnival stop the charging before that type of overage?

1st -tell your friend DONT put $4000 on a sign and sail--put $500 down and add as needed. It is the passengers responsibilty to watch their spending--they have kiosks and in room ways of checking your account. You can also just ask as guest services.

If you are planning on spending alot in the casino--dont put that on your sign and sail--keep the money in your safe and take down only what you are willing to spend that night--the casino takes cash.
