travelmom12 Posted September 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Leaving on the Summit in 36 hours. I was wondering whether to bring my own hair dryer (and if that is even allowed). I remember the hair dryer from last summer's cruise, with my thumb getting exhausted from trying to hold that button down. I see many bad hair days ahead on this cruise. Does anyone have a solution to that button? What would hold it in position so that the hairdryer functions like the ones we all use at home? Has anyone tried and succeeded with hair bands? Rubber bands? Please let me know.
Dekkers Posted September 6, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 6, 2014 A plastic zip tie worked for me.
willma Posted September 6, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 6, 2014 A sturdy rubber band works fine.
Lovemychoos Posted September 6, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I take my own travel hairdryer, it folds up, and weighs next to nothing. To be honest, I can't be bothered faffing around, trying to hold down the button, and if I did find a way to keep it down permanently, I dont think that would help, as when I'm drying my hair, I'm switching it on and off, and dont have it blasting away all the time. Babyliss do a really good one that available through Amazon with a folding handle, and comes with a travel storage bag.

travelmom12 Posted September 6, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Thanks for all the suggestions. I love the ideas. I have my daughter's travel dryer available, but am trying to pare down the packing.
gimletgal Posted September 6, 2014 #8 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I alwaus take duct tape. Works great! And then the next occupant of the cabin gets to deal with all the sticky residue from the duct tape, or do you very kindly remove it before you disembark? :)
OCruisers Posted September 6, 2014 #9 Share Posted September 6, 2014 It's somewhat annoying but really not that much trouble to hold the button down. :) LuLu
Nebr.cruiser Posted September 6, 2014 #10 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I hate holding that button down too--it actually makes my hand ache. I may try some of these tricks, especially the rubber band, so thanks everyone. I wish they'd just have decent hairdryers that actually have some power! Can'tstopcruising Posted September 6, 2014 #11 Share Posted September 6, 2014 This is one of the best topics I have read here! I,too, have trouble and my hand aches. What great suggestions. I always take bandaids,so I will try that.
cheriberi Posted September 6, 2014 #12 Share Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) And then the next occupant of the cabin gets to deal with all the sticky residue from the duct tape, or do you very kindly remove it before you disembark? :) I remove the duct tape as soon as I am finished each day. I have very short hair so my hair dries quickly, and if there is tape residue left I actually do remove it. It isn't that difficult. Redtravel Posted September 6, 2014 #13 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I brought a cloth covered elastic that can be used for a pony tail. It is soft and can hold the button. If you have room in your luggage, bring your own hairdryer.
CathyCruises Posted September 6, 2014 #14 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I've been doing this for many cruises. I just take one of the wide rubber bands that's maybe quarter inch or a little more and I wrap it around the button on the first day. Then I leave it there and I just unplug the hairdryer when I'm done with it. I have found through trial and error that if I move it up and down off the button and it will break before the end of the cruise. I already have extra rubber bands in my travel bag for the next time I cruise, whenever that may be!
LynMcGad Posted September 6, 2014 #15 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I love the elastic pony tail holders--I always have a bunch of them with me. Great idea--many thanks!
Honeybearhollow Posted September 6, 2014 #16 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I take my own hair dryer and just deal with the weight issue. Those ship dryers just do not work on my hair.
dblane Posted September 6, 2014 #17 Share Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) I have always found the hairdryer button to be a pain, and now it literally is since aging hands have developed arthritis. I now bring my own travel dryer, small but it does the job. Edited September 6, 2014 by dblane
attilamom1217 Posted September 6, 2014 #18 Share Posted September 6, 2014 I bring my own lightweight travel hair dryer. Folds up small and fits easily into my suitcase.
