freeport and nassau with young kids, prefer walking distance to port

Hi! We are leaving on our first cruise with the kiddos, ages 6 and 4, soon and are having trouble deciding on what to do in port. We will be in both ports, Nassau and Freeport, 7-3, I believe. Ideally, we want to walk to a beach, and maybe do some shopping at a straw market. We really don't want to spend a lot of money on excursions, and just want a nice safe place to play on the beach/in the water, with a bathroom nearby. I know there are lots of options to be driven to, but without carseats/booster seats, I'm not willing to try it. Right now, I'm leaning towards walking to Junkanoo Beach or taking a ferry taxi to Cabbage Beach in Nassau. I really don't have any ideas for Freeport, so am thinking we may just stay on the ship..any thoughts/suggestions on any of this would be appreciated!

Thanks!!!

we did junkanoo beach 2 years ago (Jan '13) with 4 year old and 2 year old. It wasn't a bad walk (we took stroller I think) but the weather was less than ideal (too windy / cool to swim comfortably). The beach was a little rocky too. Besides that, it was nice (cheap food and drink stands right there on beach, nice view, bathrooms (not the cleanest). We're going back to Nassau in January 2015...considering going back, but only if it is a nice day.

I agree with mjkacmom. The water is too rough at Cabbage Beach for little ones. We were there once when the waves were calm but even still there was a steep drop-off and an undertow. Unless the kids are just going to play in the sand and not go in the water, I wouldn't take them to Cabbage Beach.
