I will be sailing on the Adventure of the Seas out of San Juan, departing on 12/28/2014. It is my understanding that formal night is generally the 2nd and 5th nights. Does this change when New Year's Eve is on night four?

I will not be wearing formal attire and wold like to book Giovanni's Table instead.

Thank you .

Yes, absolutely, a formal night will be NewYearsEve. On your cruise the first formal night will be night 2 and nye will be the second formal night which is night 4. Make sure you book now, as many people that don't want to go all out formal in the MDR tend to book the specialty restaurants. A few waiters told me that NewYears Eve is always the busiest night in Chops . I would assume Giovanni's would be the same.

Ours was probably different because we were in Port Canaveral for New Years Eve. Ship left before 12 so we were at sea for celebration time. It would not have been practical for the night to be formal since many folks were off the ship going to places like Disney and Epcot.
