Gem Renovations

Let's all get our emails and calls out to ncl adapt regarding the slide

I'm wondering just how say it's going to be to get it nope tied in the 6 hour turnaround timeframe on a weekend though

Of course if I were running the place that would have been forefront in my management of this issue....delegated of course to the person responsible....but you can be sure that person would have been reminded that it would take some serious scheduling to get this done

Wow so sorry about all the spell checks. Lol

What I am saying of course is let's all get our calls and emails out to ncl regarding the slide

I'm concerned though that getting it inspected during a 6 hour turnaround day on a weekend before Christmas will be a challenge....or maybe they purposely haven't opened it to save on insurance premiums.

Someone at ncl dropped the ball on this one and whoever was responsible for getting it inspected didn't have any fore site apparently

They never ask my opinion of course but is there nobody at the top with the ability to remind someone to do this?

Yes I know it's not a job for the great 😱FDR himself.....but if I were running the show you can bet at a staff meeting I would look directly to those responsible for the pool deck and say..."now , let's make sure you have that slide up and running because as you know it needs to be inspected, insured and safe"

Otoh....it could be another bait and switch...renovate and brag about a new slide but hold back on opening it so as to save on the insurance costs....but hey the pax are a captive audience.

Ncl is just so obvious in the way they operate these days.

From someone on the Gem right now, the [iConcierge] app is up and running ( even with a special price of 1$ for the week ! )

Have fun !!!

I just checked it in the iTunes App Store. It sure has some awful reviews!

Anyone have real life experience with it?

Yes on the Breakaway last year,

We used it to check our account, book specialty restaurant, book shows, look at the daily entertainment schedule, but NOT to text or call each other on the ship...and it was great !!!

Thanks for the feedback. We were recently on RCI's new Anthem of the Seas, which has the Royal iQ App; it did the same things. (We didn't pay for the text feature either.) The trade off is --- normally, my cell phone would stay in the safe for the whole cruise! :p

I used the carnival one on the breeze when it first rolled out. We used it a lot as my gf and I could go do different things and still meet up when we wanted. It was nice to have the program of the days events in my pocket as well. I typically still carry my phone to take pictures so it is very useful.

We used the app this past summer on BA. Half of us had Android devices and the other half iPhones. I was not too impressed with the app ... it's a great concept, but needs some work to be reliable. Android version crashed multiple times upon starting or just never started. We had trouble receiving/sending texts and/or calls on all devices. Not worth the $7.95 just yet.

I think some of you are missing the point... of COURSE nobody books a cruise JUST for one element. However, the closing of ANY major attraction onboard is irritating, and moreover, the lack of communication and disclosure is worse, IMHO. What if the hot tubs weren't operational? The show theatre? One of the specialty restos that you were counting on dining in? Any of those would be disappointing, no?

That's why we are discussing this. Not because of a large plastic tube :)

All my kid is talking about is how he is going to take the slide all day long :). He would be super bumped if it would be closed. On our last cruise we hit rough sees and the slide was closed. My son was very sad about it and just wanted to stay in the room

So for some of us it is a big deal and the kids are disappointed.

Jmo but I wouldn't book a cruise to go or based on a waterslide. If that was my concern I would go to a theme park.

I wouldn't either. But I booked the cruise, before I knew about any refurb, that included a water slide. A water slide that I know my daughters will enjoy and I will probably as well. Also one of the few things families can do together in the pool area.

Well put. I do not care about going to one of the shows on the Gem. But I would understand people being upset with it being closed if it was something they enjoy.

The slides don't matter to us, BUT if we were traveling with children it would be a MAJOR deal. Children spend hours upon hours there. I would hate to be the parents that have to tell their children the slide is closed. There is nothing worse than disappointing your child, and having to deal with an upset child. Would ruin my vacation, knowing my child was upset.

Very wrong that slide not opened, especially for the holiday break.

Safe sailing

Excellent post

Not that the ncl kool aid guzzlers will admit it though

Fwiw. If that slide is nt operational it will just prove to me that ncl management is probably so messed up that they can't clearly think 2 steps ahead

If it were me and I had some authority regarding the dry dock renovation and had any say at all with the slide replacement(someone had to be in charge of it right? Or did that person quit or was fired? I hear that's happening at ncl these days) in addition to replacing the slide with quality products and using trained workers to install it....I also would have checked the cruise calendar....found out where the inspection needs to take place...NYC or Bahamas.....and make sure I delegated that task to my most competent supervisor to get done

You know none of that happened though and it's probably because FDR seems like a micromanager to me and everyone has to wait for his ok before a thing gets done.

I completely agree with this. Was there an official posting when booking your cruise that the ship may be under renovations and certain items not available? Very unlikely. Heck the website still shows the bowling alley that isn't available. I feel like advertising things that aren't available on your vacation is not only unfair but a borderline bait and switch.

Some form of compensation should be issued if the items that are advertised with your vacation when booking are out of order or under construction as I believe all the available "attractions" are what adds the value to your purchase.

I agree they should have said something. There was definitely a lot of cloak and dagger regarding the dry dock and refurb. If it weren't for this thread, there was no info available. No information given at all regarding the closure of the water slide. I sailed 11/23. They said nothing unless you asked. If you are traveling with kids, it really is a big deal. Did it ruin my vacation or theirs ? No. But I would have liked to have been told even as just a courtesy.

The lack of information across all cruise lines can be very annoying. I primarily sail with Carnival, and I can remember being on hold with the casino for long periods of time and they had a canned announcement that ran over and over. They talked about free room service and how you should "Go ahead and get those eggs at 3 a.m." First, room service never offered eggs at anytime, and second there aren't eggs available anywhere at 3 a.m. on the ship....and this was presumably created by their marketing department.

After the Carnival Pride dry dock it was a couple of months before they had the slide working (it was the type that starts with a free fall). So it definitely happens. I just wish they would update their websites to reflect what's actually functional, not each and every day, but if something hasn't started working yet, that should be noted. I'm disappointed that the bowling alley is gone, and the only way that I would know that's the case is by visiting this website.

The funniest case was on the Magic when a restaurant that didn't exist any longer was included in the ship's map that they passed out upon embarkation, lol!

Have you ever gone to an amusement park like Disneyworld and had an attraction or two closed for maintenance?

Yes. When major attractions are closed, they post it at the ticket booths AND sometimes update their websites depending on the length of the downtime. NCL is very lax at updating their website. I would think they would aggressively advertise the dry dock renovations. Not a peep!!!! Also, there are scores of other things to do at Disney. Not so much on the Gem. I get it. No refunds. But I don't see how anyone can be OK with their complete lack of communication about it. They should have said SOMETHING. Makes me wonder what else aren't they telling me.
