laughing husky Posted December 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 9, 2014 title is pretty self explanatory, but catching a train to Geneva which leaves at 10:25.....would rather catch the earlier train than the later train if at all possible....Is it doable? cporses Posted December 9, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 9, 2014 Need to know what time you berth and disembark. The people mover is about 10 minute walk from the ship. It heads across to the main rail station with very frequent services. Bob Sent from my tablet thingy!

susietb Posted December 10, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2014 It takes from 10-15 minutes to walk with your luggage (if it is on wheels and you can handle it easily) to the People Mover. People Mover including waiting time 10 minutes to Piazzale Roma. Then a 15 minute walk over a bridge, the stairs have narrrow risers and if you are reasonably fit, it's not a problem. Then there is another 10 minute walk on flat service to the entrance to Santa Lucia Station. The main entrance has some stairs to navigate, but if you go a few yards farther there is a an icon for a handicapped sign which has a sloped ramp that deposits you at the side entrance to the terminal. I would set aside 45 minutes to make your train.
Earl Rosebery Posted December 10, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2014 Could you catch the train in Mestre (the nearest mainland station) instead? My understanding is that all trains from Venice stop there. Mestre station is much easier to get to from the port. It's 5 minutes by taxi.
euro cruiser Posted December 10, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 10, 2014 Need to know what time you berth and disembark. The people mover is about 10 minute walk from the ship. It heads across to the main rail station with very frequent services. Just to be clear, the People Mover does not get you to the train station, it only goes as far as Piazzale Roma and you have to get across the Grand Canal from there to Venice Santa Lucia. You can do this by walking across the pedestrian bridge or by taking the vaporetto for one stop. Could you catch the train in Mestre (the nearest mainland station) instead? My understanding is that all trains from Venice stop there. Mestre station is much easier to get to from the port. It's 5 minutes by taxi. This is a significant underestimate, it's more like 15 minutes in the best case and 20 - 25 minutes if you hit traffic, and that's only after you and your luggage are inside the taxi and moving. Add to that a few minutes to orient yourself in the station, to purchase your tickets, and to get yourself to the correct track.

mapleleaves Posted December 19, 2014 #8 Share Posted December 19, 2014 susietb's directions are spot on, altho the times provided are worse case scenario since it's hard to know how much foot traffic you'll encounter. Better safe than sorry. ie once you leave the People Mover at Piazzale Roma, it normally takes 15 minutes to walk a block to the Grand Canal, cross the bridge, and walk another 1 1/2 blocks to the train station. The Calatrava Bridge is big. The steps are shallow which makes it easier to drag wheeled luggage, but it also means there are more of them. If you can't easily manage your luggage, take the Earls advice and take a taxi to Mestre to meet your train. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/top-tourist-mistakes-7.htm
