And all through the house.... :)

What's your "night before cruising" ritual/plan/tradition?

Tonight DH and I are headed to San Francisco for our cruise tomorrow.

We don't have any rituals. It depends where our port is.

I'm on the same cruise as Timetraveller, and I woke up at 5 am, unable to sleep any longer. I'm ready to board! :D

Normally, the night before cruising we are at a hotel and I am trying to 'mess up' the suitcases as little as possible while thinking about how we are getting to the port. But this cruise leaves from my home port, so I'm still in my own bed at home. It's disconcerting, to say the least, because in the back of my mind I feel like I'm late and will miss the ship...

I usually stay overnight in a hotel near the port the night before so that I can begin to unplug from my normal routines of work and home. I plan to have a leisurely meal and have a nice drink in the lounge to toast the beginning of my holiday. I might watch a bit of TV and try to get some sleep because I know I will be restless until I actually get to the port, drop off my luggage, and stand in line.

Invariably I am too excited to really sleep so I know that my first night on the ship will be a quieter night as I settle into my new cabin!

Our best night before in a hotel was in San Juan before our CB cruise and our hotel room overlooked the pier. What a joy and how exciting it was to wake up and see the ship right there. We even had breakfast on the balcony and gazed upon "our ship" talking about how in a few hours we'll be on board!

Twas the night before sailing, when all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring, not even the click of a mouse.

The sea passes were printed near the laptop with care,

In hopes that their ship soon would be there.

The children were nestled, all snug in their beds,

While visions of kid’s clubs danced in their heads.

And Mama on her iPhone®, the iPad™ on Dad’s lap,

Had just settled in to download the Everglades app.

When out of the blue, they heard some strange chatter,

They turned up the TV to see what was the matter.

An anchorman said, “It’s a holiday dash –

All airports are crowded, get there in a flash!”

The cruisers were ready, despite all the snow,

They’d arrived at the departure port one day ago.

Behind was the airport, the TSA lines,

Ahead was sushi and champagne in the Piazza at Vines!

Tomorrow was free valets with service so lively and quick,

They’d known since cruise one, a holiday cruise was the trick!

Passports in hand, the security line smooth,

Passengers soon mingling with officers and crew,

No jostling and shouting, and boarding so fast

Welcome aboard and smile, as photos are snapped.

And then in a twinkling, one by one stepped aboard,

The atrium greeted them and champagne was poured.

Now on to the cabins and a ship to explore.

(And the lifeboat drill, always such a bloody bore!)

Then sail-away time and the dock lines are cast,

Now it’s time for merriment and unlimited snacks.

MDR, pizza and breakfast buffet,

More food than you can eat in one non-stop day.

Desserts so tempting, you have to choose two,

Should we go to the casino or a show, there’s so much to do.

MUTS, Spa, Wheelhouse Bar. A walk under the stars.

Or a drink at each and every one of the bars.

Then the captain comes on, and says with such might,

“Welcome aboard, Happy Holidays and to all a good night!”

Nice poem, baronessk!

Our pre cruise ritual is to take our 2 cats to "cat camp", also known as our friend's house. We get the little campers settled in, then we take the camp counselors out to dinner. Once we get home, we do our final packing check and get the car loaded for the next morning. Then comes the hard part - trying to sleep! We can't wait until it's time to drive to port!

The poem was excellent. The problem is that there is a lot truth to it.

Out of San Francisco: We spend all day driving up from LA. We spend the night in at the San Jose Airport Courtyard. San Jose is cheaper that Frisco. We eat at the Japanese restaurant down the street

Fort Lauderdale: We spend all day flying in. We stay at the Courtyard Port Dania making sure we sign up for the shuttle to the ship. We eat at the fish place next door.

LA: I get kicked out of the bedroom while my wife packs. I complain that she packed to much and the luggage is too heavy. My wife refuses to cook so we have dinner out.

Everywhere Else. We make sure we are in port the day before.

We watch a bad cruise movie or a scary cruise movie (example: Deep Rising or Ghost Ship). It's fun and we realize no matter what, our upcoming cruise can't possibly be that bad!

hahaha, I may try this! Tonight is my "night before" and the first time I've cruised from my own town, so didn't need to fly out the night before - not entirely sure what I'm going to do. Need to finish packing, that's for sure!

We always arrive at least the day before if not earlier for a cruise. Yes it indeed is difficult to sleep that last night before embarking. The night before we put everything we used back in the suitcases except for what will be needed in the morning. Morning brings breakfast and then the shuttle to the ship.

If we fly into the port, we return home the day after leaving the ship so that there is no need to hurry off the ship to catch a flight. It makes for a very peaceful departure from the ship and flight the next day.

I plan to fly to the embarkation city, the next state's capital, and buy some nibbles that I know from experience REALLY fill me up, so I can have some cocktails on board. I've already promised my security guard cousin to alternate cocktail, soft drink, mocktail, soft drink/juice/ice cream so I should minimise a hangover, and there's plenty of food available to help! My Hone town doesn't have a suitable morning flight, and I wouldn't risk the delay anyway, I DON'T DO STRESS! It will also give me an opportunity to gather information for a friend, and several new experiences for me!
