We cancelled a trans-atlantic having to fly back from London due to the airport taxes. DH refused to pay it (one thing if it is a business trip) so we are doing a cruise that we fly back from Barcelona. One thing you can do although airlines don't want you to do it it to buy a round trip ticket and not use the back end of the ticket. Example from Barcelona to US and back to Barcelona but not go back. Much cheaper than one way. DH has flown almost 2 million miles on a US carrier and he said this is done all the time. A friend of ours just changed her one way ticket that she had purchased to a round trip and got a $1600 credit to her credit card.

Bear in mind that if the airline chooses, according to contract of carriage, if you fly a broken leg route, adjust the fare and charge you the difference.

They don't, routinely, but they can.

If you're planning on flying into the UK you can always try flying via Ireland. Flights into and out of Ireland aren't suject to the same hefty taxes and surcharges that we enjoy in the UK. The best way to do it is book your transatlantic flight into Dublin and then book a separate flight from Dublin into London (which are plentiful). There's a lot of money to be saved doing it this way.
