envy4u Posted January 17, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 17, 2015 Looking for an excellent Spanish tapas style restaurant near Las Ramblas. We would like to eat where the locals eat not the tourist as they are usually not that good and overpriced. Suggestions?

MADflyer Posted January 20, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 20, 2015 There are no venues in Barcelona that do not have tourists, while some are frequented heavily by locals as well. Ciudad Condal is probably the best of these and they do have one of their locations just above Plaza Catalunya not far from the top of the Ramblas. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187497-d1059712-Reviews-Ciudad_Condal-Barcelona_Catalonia.html They offer very high quality tapas and the Cava Sangria is a fantastic beverage option that is very popular in Barcelona. The price is mid-range, but in relation to quality the value is high.
Rare marazul Posted January 20, 2015 #5 Share Posted January 20, 2015 (edited) The point of tapas is to do the "tapeo" (tah-PAY-oh) - a neighborhood stroll (pub crawl) to different tapas bars. The object is not to make a meal in one place. Plan to go to three or four restaurants in the neighborhood. Have a couple of tapas and a glass of wine in each. That's what the locals do. What you are after is having the traditional tapas dishes: jamon pata negra, pulpo a la gallega, papas bravas, albondigas, pimientos del padron, stuffed piquillo peppers, etc, etc, etc. Do look for some recommendations, but most neighborhood bars do not make the US review lists. However, they are excellent just the same. Edited January 20, 2015 by marazul

Loonbeam Posted January 22, 2015 #7 Share Posted January 22, 2015 You might want to consider doing a tour with The Barcelona Taste? We did one back in 2012 and it was excellent. 4 venues, 2 different kinds of tapas, wine and cheese, and a bakery for dessert. All food and drink included plus a walking tour. And only one place had tourists, the rest were out of the way...

4774Papa Posted February 1, 2015 #10 Share Posted February 1, 2015 We very much enjoyed Cuines Santa Caterina, not far from Las Ramblas, northeast of the cathedral square. We had dinner at ATN, which was located close to a Roman excavation of tombs just off Las Ramblas on Canuda Street. The restaurant was open, even though it was about early by Spanish dinner standards. We had a wonderful meal with great service. Separate checks were not a problem with a party of six and credit cards were accepted. The next day, we had dinner at small tapas restaurant near the Plaza Sant Just on Palma De Sant Just. That restaurant, Bodega LaPalma, was not modern like ATN, but small and rustic. The tapas were excellent, with large servings for very reasonable prices. I highly recommend both restaurants. mudinthecreek Posted February 11, 2015 #11 Share Posted February 11, 2015 Las Ramblas might be good for a stroll to see the action, but if you don't wont to eat where the tourists are I would probably check another neighborhood for tapas. Check out the El born or vila de Gracia neighborhoods for a more local feel.
nearlytheir Posted February 15, 2015 #12 Share Posted February 15, 2015 If you want to eat where the locals go, dont choose a restaurant on Las Ramblas - they are just for the tourists! The Concierge at the Majestic Hotel recommended it and we have always enjoyed fabulous Tapas at Cerveceria Catalana Carrer de Mallorca, 236, 08008 Barcelona, Spain (Eixample) +34 932 160 368 If you want more recommendation - http://suitelife.com/2012/02/08/cerveceria-catalana-the-best-tapas-restaurant-in-barcelona-tapas-in-barcelona/ You'll find it on the corner of Rambla de Catalunya and Carrer de Mallorca, 6 blocks up from the Placa de Catalunya - the delicious food makes the walk worthwhile! You wont be disappointed!
