San Francisco Pearl Divers

Recommended Posts

Have a question for those of you in the Frisco Bay Area:

Tuesday 2/3 will be our 36th Wedding Anniversary. We are both originally from the "OC" and spent our Honeymoon in San Francisco. We booked a 15 Day Hawaii cruise on the Princess Star in March; we elected to take the cruise out of San Fran as opposed to LA for this reason.

Anyway; almost 36 years ago we went to a place in China Town that had pearl divers; back then you paid a fee and one of the ladies would dive down and bring back an oyster, they would then open the oyster to reveal a pearl. The pearl was yours to keep or you could pay to have it mounted.

Does anyone know if a place like this still exists?

I haven't seen any information on divers getting an oyster, but there are places at Fisherman's Wharf that have a container of oysters that you can pick one and have them open it for you. They will also sell you a mounting and mount it for you.

Since you are going to Hawaii, the International Marketplace in Honolulu also has a few places that do this.

The locals have referred to San Francisco as Frisco as long as I can remember.

I have only lived here for every one of my 58 years. A local refers to SF as "The City". Very few call it "Frisco". Most I know immediately know when we are talking to a non-SF resident, when they call it "Frisco".

We've seen the same business setup in Las Vegas Casino's.

Thanks for the tip but it just wouldn't provide the same sentimental experience.

Tell you what, we won't call you an okie if you don't call it Frisco. Born and raised 4th generation city girl and never in my 65 years have I ever know a native to call it Frisco.

Got It?????

Wouldn't bother me....I'm not an Okie.

I found this rather amusing for you "Friscan's"

Me: I'm going to a club in Frisco tonight.

Uptight Friscan: Frisco? Nobody from here calls it that! Please use San Francisco

Me: Yah, I love living in Frisco.

Uptight Friscan: Please don't disrespect the city by using that term.

Me: Wow, Frisco sure has great night life - and a lot of anal retentive idiots

Your post makes it pretty evident we don't talk to the same people. GOT IT ???

I WONDER WHY THOSE SILLY PEOPLE WHO FOUNDED THE SLSF RAILWAY NICKNAMED IT "THE FRISCO LINE". They should have asked your friends first. BTW I missed being an "Okie" by a few miles.
