Technical issue on Quantum

Currently on the cruise having an amazing time. Food and service has been great in all of the restaurants. Best Foid from RCCL and we have been cruising a number of years with the them. The technical issue was unfortunate and a bit of an inconvenience but was very pleased with the final outcome. We has 6:45 reservations for Grande. We wound up having a snack at Sorrento and free drinks at both Schooner and Robot bar. It allowed us to try a few custom drinks and experience the robot bar for free which we probably would have skipped if we had to pay. We were then able to eat at Grande at 8:45 with quick service and excellent food. On top of that a 10 % future cruise credit. I would gladly take this tradeoff again. The captain was responsive and communicated regular updates and the company did right by us with the credit offer. I will remain loyal to Royal.

Let's see now for $1.5 billion we've got:

Creakiest ship I've ever been on

A/C issues

Icy liquid developing on the frame of my sliding balcony door

Whistling sound in the Solarium, even though windows closed

Tsunami floods from the kiddie pools when the ship rocks

Dynamic Dining disaster for some folks. Although I enjoyed it as I had

reservations

Can't wait for the reviews from current Pax .

What else is in store for this proud ship.

Currently on board. The issue with the restaurants was pretty crappy 2 nights ago but we aren't letting it ruin our vacation. We booked in Wonderland (which we ate at twice and both times it was darn incredible) instead of going to WJ...I know a lot of people don't have the option to do that because of cost reasons. Chic was the only restaurant on board that I felt had terrible service. The waiters are fabulous but there is something going on in the kitchen and bussing that is causing serious problems. Food came out cold or took forever to receive (and was cold) and food was bussed into carts or their prep areas which were stacked to the sky with dirty dishes (DISGUSTING).

The snap, crackle, pop sound?:). I spent over an hour trying to locate and silence the source of that particular noise. Definitely coming from the door and or frame but the only thing I found that silenced it was cracking the door a bit which of course turned the ac off. The cabin steward claimed it was because the ship was new but I have no plans to go back to find out whether he was right or not.

Captain Gus on his "ask the Captain session" mentioned that the creaking is because it's a new ship and that it will dissipate with time. Only time will tell, but we'll never know as the ship will be in China. Can't wait for the Anthem reviews.

As I mentioned in some of the partial reviews, wait service was spotty in both complementary and specialty restaurants. The worse were in two places: Grande the 1st time, the waiter was indifferent and the 2nd was in Jamie as he just about refused to bring bread and the olives that's normally given as starter. Chic wasn't bad and the Chilean Sea Bass was excellent. Overall service was good in American Icon Grille and I think it's because there were so many supervisory staff floating around.

The best wait service received was the last nite at Silk and I believe the head waiter's name was Didih(?) (can't recall the asst. waiter's name) and pleasantly surprised with a separate special menu which had grilled lobster(s) on the menu. Downside to Silk was no spicy Chinese mustard to go along with the dried noodles. lol They tried a concoction, but it tasted all mayo.

Overall the food quality and selections was much better than other ships. The selections in the WJ was exquisite the 2 nites that we went up to review it. Selection of cheeses and Italian antipasti was to die for. The bakery had one of the best bread selections and freshly baked cookies of any ship's fleet. On the last night, they had surf & turf as a specialty entrée--it was comprised of huge prawns to go along with filet mignon. On top of that there was pasta, dessert, & ice cream bar station with all of the add ons.

Also currently on Quantum. Won't comment too much on dining as it would be too long. Suffice it to say that they have a lot of service issues to work out. Very slow. Leave more than 2 hours if you plan a show. But the waiters work their behinds off. For us, the food was very good and always hot.

As for the "technical issue," we were lucky. We are in a Spa JS and had access to Coastal Cuisine which has the best service, and was unaffected. But did a Bridge Tour yesterday and the Officer told us that they had a food and waste leak that affected some of the electrical system so they had to shut it down. That was the 4 restaurants and some AC. The AC in the CL was out but they had a fan in it and kept it running no problem. Didn't hear of any cabins losing AC. They did a great job fixing it. They did send us a letter giving us a 10% discount of the price we paid for this cruise to be applied to a future cruise. That's in addition to the free drinks. I think the crew handled it very well.

Funny, on our 2/2 cruise there was an announcement of smoke coming from the incinerator--related?

Just left the Quantum this morning. Dining issue was only one night and they handled it perfectly. People need to stop griping about everything. We LOVED our trip! No cleaning, cooking, driving in traffic PLUS GREAT shows, friendly staff.. I will put up a review in a few days.

Are they letting people in JS back into Coastal Kitchen, or are they just honoring the reservations that were booked before the change to Grand Suite and above? Is it just for dinner, or can JS go for breakfast and lunch too?

I am fast coming to the conclusion that Quantum should have spent a few more weeks at the builders being finished off. For such a new ship, things seem to break down quite often.

More effort should have been made by Rcc over the training of the staff also on this ship. Its not the staffs fault if they are suddenly given ipads and don't know how to use them, to be quite honest They are a gimmick and nothing use. Most people want to leave technology at home when they go on holiday.

I just hope that Anthem is not in the same condition when she is rolled out. People make excusses for all these malefactions, but they shouldn't be happening, especially when they are charging what they are.

Gail, I believe they recently changed it back to JS and above. We were in a SJS on your sailing :) and had no problems eating in Coastal Kitchen several times for lunch. We never tried it for breakfast as 3 meals a day is too much for us.

Edit to add--we were in SJS# 12638 and heard lots of creaking, cranking and other noises the first 2 sea days going and the last 2 sea days coming back. We were so tired each and every night that we were able to fall asleep with no problems.

Hi Linda,

I was in a SJS on the 3 night in November, and they were giving me a hard time on that sailing honoring my reservation for dinner. I had a copy of my reservation on me and also a copy of the policy when I first booked back in 2013 when JS were allowed to book. They ended up letting me in.

I have the SJS 11638 for the April cruise and I hope the creaking is gone. I'm bringing my ear plugs just in case. I was preselected to book my dinner reservations for that cruise, and have CK for 2 nights. I'm bringing a copy just in case. It would be nice to try it for lunch.

It seems to me from everything I read that a good amount of problems still exist on Quantum. How can such "new" things seem to be breaking down. I've been on other ships that were less than 3 months old and never experienced any of the issues some are reporting on their cruises, especially the creaking noises.

Perhaps she is not happy going to China!

Yeah no spicy mustard! We asked too! Sitting in work now wishing I was still on board Quantum.

Agree,

We were on Oasis and Allure on their inaugural year and we did not

encounter as many problems as Quantum. This being a new ship

it sure has a lot of issues that we should not be experiencing.

Where is the WOW factor? Hummm...

As I stated earlier in this thread, I think Quantum should have spent more time being got ready for sailing. If they had spent more time on getting the ship ready and less time on the silly things like pink bear, robot bartenders and

using ipads etc. etc. What is wrong with the old way of getting on the ship, the new way using ipads seems to take a lot longer than I have ever spent getting on using the old way. Pink bear, want an absolute waste of money, that money could have gone to improve the food, or employ more people, robot bartenders alright for a gimmick, once you have seen it thats that. They charge more for a drink from the robots than they charge for a drink from a bar next door.

Once booking opens up, I have some decisions to make.

I was so excited to book Anthem for Summer 2016. But between the issues on Quantum and how amazing Allure was, I may be in for a big disappointment.

It seems that the big thing on this ship was to be the dining experience.

However, DD, by a large amount seems to have failed, and possibly the quality that this ship yard put out, at least with this last build seems to be less than what past builds have produced from various other yards.

Most of the things on this ship were "gimmicky" at the on-set, where having a split hull design like Allure and Oasis have, was revolutionary and made that ship a real "WOW".

This ship doesn't seem to hold a whole lot of WOW factor to me.

I will say that it does look elegant, and very classy.

But it certainly doesn't fit the hype that they were pitching.

The savings on air fare would be a huge bonus for us, since we live in NY, and the extra nights at a hotel before and after our cruise would not be necessary.

But we have some friends who are going to be first timers, and it would be nice if they got to experience a WOW.

Maybe Oasis IV will come to NY :D

I was on this sailing, and while I may have had my own issues with Dynamic dining, I found no other faults with the ship. I'd honestly go as far as to say it was my best cruise yet.

In terms of the dining technical fiasco, I thought it was handled by the staff beautifully. Free open bar from 5:30 until 10pm was greatly enjoyed, I don't care what anyone says. I was sitting at Vintages when the announcement was made and it was empty, within 5 minutes the bar was mobbed, and other than people talking about the issue no one was out for blood. Maybe that was the case elsewhere, I don't know.

Not only was the bar open for that 4.5 hour stretch, they offered 10% of your paid cruise amount as a credit for another cruise - that I think was beyond what they needed to do and I'm very happy with how they handled it.

We were also on this sailing. We were a little surprised to find some things not working properly on a new ship. From automatic toilets not flushing to elevators going in the wrong direction. We also got stuck on Northstar. Some of our waiters struggled with the iPad, while others just went back to a pen and paper. One of our waiters actually joked that he needed to be a computer engineer in order to work on Quantum. The technical issue with dining one night was handled properly be the captain and staff. Despite some small annoyances, we did have a decent cruise.

I agree. The open bar was great (but many people went way overboard) and people seemed to forgive and forget about the dining issue (mostly forget). I was at Schooner Bar, Bionic Bar, and the Casino Bar during this stretch and all were packed with people laughing instead of being miserable.

The Quantum wasn't our cup of tea and in fact we cancelled our Anthem cruise as soon as we got back but we're not sorry we tried her out. That's really the only way to know whether you'll like it or not.

We're flying to Florida :( for the Oasis in April but we'll be going out of Cape Liberty on the Liberty of the Seas in October:). I think the LOS is only going to be sailing out of there temporarily and we have no idea what, if anything, they'll replace her with. Personally, I was quite happy with the Explorer.

One has to ask the question - Would the passengers have been so forgiving if RC had not opened up the bar.? It seems that RC are giving an awful lot of free drinks, 10%s off, more OBC etc, etc. these days. Just to keep passengers happy. You can hardly read a review or blog or in fact anything that doesn't report something amiss.

I am a loyal Royal Caribbean customer however I have to say that things are starting it get to the point that I might have to make a change.

We will be on the Quantum in April and who would have thought that we're hoping something goes wrong to get free drinks or internet !! With our luck, it will be a perfect cruise and no complaining! With over 20+ cruises, the only ones you really remember are the ones when crazy stuff happens and you have stories to tell back home!!
