Epic bathrooms- ideas?

I just booked an inside family cabin for a mediterranean cruise! I read a lot of posts about the bathrooms. I like that they are separated, but I hate that they are see through. What the heck? Anyway, we are ncl fans, so this wasn't going to stop us from picking the epic for this dream itinerary.

I remember reading about someone who was going to use suction cup hooks and a shower curtain liner, but I can't find that post anywhere. I was wondering if it worked or if anyone has thought of any other ideas that will allow for some privacy. It will definitely bother us, esp. My very modest teen daughter, even if others can see an outline. I have seen pictures and even a video so I am aware of how it looks and really don't want to argue about whether or not we need to cover it :) How about draping a large towel over the shower/toilet doors? I could take two cheap lightweight beach towels and just leave them there.

From past experience, there are four of us and we will need to walk by to get in and out or multitask. Isn't that the purpose of separating the areas? One person can use the toilet or brush while other takes a shower.

From our cruise last month, I can tell you that you can only see an "outline" if the bathroom light is on and the cabin light is off or just dark in the cabin. If the cabin lights are on, you can not see an "outline" through the frosted glass.

My cruise on the epic was some time ago, but if I remember right, sure the shower was separated by a curtain from the rest of the room but in order to go in or out of the room you would have to walk past the shower.... To those who are quick to proclaim no big deal... It kind of is to some... Especially when traveling with your immediate family. I know I wouldn't love it..

For one thing, the bathrooms on Epic, unlike those found in the Haven on the Jewel-class ships, do NOT have see thru glass on the doors. The glass is opaque.

The other question that you really have to ask yourself is this: If a family member is using either the toilet or shower, why on earth would another family member be standing outside of the glass door and watching them? Nobody can see you if nobody is looking.

So pull the curtain across.

There should be no modesty issues at that point as nothing can be seen.

The only real issue I see is if someone is taking a shower and another person wants to leave/enter the room. They'll either have to wait until that person is done or deal with the two seconds it takes to have someone walk by and possibly see an mere outline of someone in the toilet/shower.

The real question is, when someone swings the door open from the hallway, can anyone walking by see that someone is in the shower/toilet? That would be my only ick moment.

Honestly, 4000+ people have sailed the Epic each week for over 4 years. Have you, or anyone else, seen even ONE post here from somebody saying: "I was walking down the hall on the Epic, someone opened a door to their room, and God as my witness I was looking right at someone in the shower/on the toilet!"?

Ha! No...but I'd be the one...LOL. Point taken!!

As others have said, there is a curtain.

However, I would have thought that realistically it would be unusual for you all to be sat on the beds whilst one person showers. Eventhough there is only me and Mr C I often pop and start getting ready by having a shower while he is doing something else (sitting in the hot tub, watching sport, playing in the casino, watching a film etc etc) and visa versa. Or I'm sat putting on my make up whilst he is in the shower - so not wandering in and out with the door open.

I'm sure you will be fine - and it can't be that bad with the amount of people who go again and again :)

Having sailed the Epic in November, I can understand where you are coming from. Yes, like others has said there is a curtain, but as a mother of a teen boy who would be mortified had he seen have my naked behind , I can totally relate. We did a jerry rigged curtain. The actual curtain can be tied covering up the important body parts in the shower using a hairclip. It worked for the shower situation, especially since I never knew when he was coming or going. You can alternatively do suction cups from the dollar store and a cheap shower curtain suction cupped to the exterior door. If you attach it to both ends of the doors (one that opens and the one that doesn't), that should work perfectly.

Alternatively, we had some strategically placed towels by the shower or I've seen others talk about using some tape and wrapping paper on the exterior of it.

FYI - I was mortified when my husband opened the door wide open while I was sitting on the pot and yes, you can see a pretty clear silhouette, knowing clear well that I had seen others on the pot while their unsuspecting spouse/kid opened the door.

All in all, it wasn't that big of a deal. I think it's a bigger issue prior to sailing and when you get on and after the first day or so, you quickly forget it.

The way the door opened on our cabin, it opened beside the shower, so it sort of made a big blockade as the person walked into the room. If my son had come in while I was showering, he would have seen the curtain pulled, known that meant I was in the shower, and simply walked straight ahead without turning his head to try to see. I'd hope other people's kids would try not to see, also. Egads.

I don't know. After 30 years of marriage I don't see the problem. So what if he sees me on the toilet or my shadow in the shower? And should someone see me when the door is opened Not a big deal. I don't know you and you don't know me. If the bathroom is a make or break deal I feel sorry for you. Enjoy your vacation and don't worry about who sees what!!!

It's a different ballgame when you have a teen in the picture. My kids are fairly paranoid about privacy. It just seems much easier to put something up and forget it, compared to having to be vigilant about who is doing what. IME, we tend to be in and out at all times, and this time the kids will be allowed to do their own thing, too. I'm amused that this is such a controversy because it is such a personal thing - while it might not bother one person, it can be a problem for someone else, and I don't see why this is so hard to understand. I appreciate the ideas! I'm not sure how this happened, but I accidentally started a duplicate thread, where someone suggested contact paper. Lots of great ideas! The contact paper might be the easiest, as I've actually heard of people using that as a temporary window covering! hmmm...

Another person said it's not an issue if the light is on in the cabin AND the toilet/shower, which is reassuring, but I think I will take some sort of device just in case.

I haven't researched the EPIC much, specifically because of the bathrooms. However, are there showers in the gym locker room area that your daughter might be more comfortable using?

Maggie

I'm pretty sure there are no showers in the gym area. The showers in the spa area have the same near-opaque but translucent doors- at least they seemed so to me. Fortunately for OP, many effective solutions have been suggested. Epic bathrooms don't bother us, but if they did, I think I would use the outside drape/curtain scenario.

Hi there

I posted on the duplicate thread but just wanted to add that if you do rig up additional privacy curtains would you mind posting a picture and reporting back (if you get the chance that is ?)

Would be very helpful to those looking for similar solution in the future :)

Hope it all goes well and you have a great holiday

It's not just my teen daughter, but I also have an 11 year old son. They would scream if they accidentally saw each other in either situation lol

I will certainly post pics and give an honest review from the perspective of someone who WAS concerned about it initially! :) I hope it won't be an issue and this was all for nothing.

My engineer husband is going to get a big kick out of this - I can see it now.

At party city they have plastic wall hangings that people put on their doors for different occasions. Since they are plastic, you could cut it to size and tape it over the doors.

BEST idea! Easy and cheap and miniscule to pack....so many themes, too! Luau party in the potty 😂 or other funny posters.

THEY ARE NOT SEE THROUGH IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!

I stayed in a cabin with a like gender friend for a week and we never used the curtain.

It never occurred to me because I didn't see a silhouette, naked body, or any such thing when they were using the toilet or shower.

I can't fathom that a curtain would not ease even the paranoid.

If you travel with people that are going to stand a foot from you and watch you shower or use the bathroom, I'd suggest you get separate cabins.

I think that's what's getting missed here to. Teens are a different breed all together, LOL. Especially, when they are independent enough to come and go as they please. In the end it wasn't a big deal for us, but we did some "covering" of the doors. The view is opaque not completely see through, but you get enough of a view to see dingleberries and natural floating devices, LOL. That was enough for us to cover it up, LOL. Either way, have a great trip! The Epic is a beautiful ship with lots to offer. My son and teen brothers, loved loved the teen lounge!

I've sailed on Epic twice. Personally, the bathroom/shower situation would be the least of your worries. The fact that there is limited access to the outside world is what drove me crazy on this ship. Unless you have a balcony, the only way you can enjoy the outside is to go up to the pool deck, which is noisy and not relaxing. I actually thought the design of the cabins was the nicest thing about this ship. I see that NCL learned their lesson with this class of ship and didn't produce any more.

Married couples probably won't have a problem with the whole bathroom thing. Families with teenagers might.
