Capt_BJ Posted March 10, 2015 #3 Share Posted March 10, 2015 as is common in an incident like this the entire Houston canal is not closed: THE COTP HOUSTON/ GALVESTON HAS ESTABLISHED A SAFETY ZONE IN THE HOUSTON SHIP CHANNEL FROM THE FRED HARTMAN BRIDGE TO HSC LIGHT 86 DUE TO COLLISION AND CHEMICAL SPILL. NO VESSEL MAY TRANSIT THE SAFETY ZONE. quicklink to USCG Houston/Galveston with port status: https://homeport.uscg.mil/mycg/portal/ep/portDirectory.do?tabId=1&cotpId=
CountryCruiser Posted March 11, 2015 #4 Share Posted March 11, 2015 That's actually North of Bayport cruise terminal. Hopefully won't affect Galveston.
sptrout Posted March 11, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 11, 2015 That's actually North of Bayport cruise terminal. Hopefully won't affect Galveston. Watching a local news report on TV last night, the reporter was interviewing a person who lives on Galveston Bay. From that person's backyard, which is on the waterfront, the leaking tanker was visible and so was the Bayport Cruise Terminal (which is south of the tanker). However, there has been no mention that I have seen or read that says that the Bayport Cruise Terminal is closed. I believe that it is only busy on Saturdays and Sundays. None of this affects the Port of Galveston, which is several miles south of the accident. To give you an idea of how long the Port of Houston Ship Channel is; it is 52 miles. The Panama Canal is about 55 miles.
