Accessible Room on Oasis

Recommended Posts

I recently had to change from 2 rooms with 2 in each to 1 room with 2 and the other with 3. The only room in our category (Central Park Balcony) that would hold 3 was an accessible room on deck 14 (the other is on 10). They told me that we could be bumped if it was needed and I told my TA to see if they can put it in the notes that I would prefer it so that we don't keep someone who needs that kind of room from cruising. So please don't flame me for taking that room. The only other categories was an Ocean view balcony that was over $2k more:eek: and an inside that was a couple hundred more but I'm not willing to pay more and get less.

My question is what will be the big differences in the room. I know it's larger but that's no big deal to us, we don't spend enough time in the cabin to care about some more floor space. But I see the closet looks different and the shower in the bathroom looks like there are no walls, but just a curtain I guess to make it easier to get in and out. That just seems weird to me to just be a curtain and there's a drain in front of the door which suggests to me that when showering the water gets all over the bathroom floor:(

I'm really hoping that something else opens up or maybe the OV balconies come down in price before we sail so that we can switch out. Plus I'm not real happy that we went from the 10th deck to the 14th which puts us closer to the pools and all of the noise that comes with them. But I had to do what I could to allow this additional person to go.

Any other thoughts on these accessible rooms??

Has the final payment period past for the cruise in question and is the cruise embarking from a USA Port? If the final payment period has NOT past and if the cruise is embarking from a USA port than I'm surprised that RCCL let you book the Accessible Cabin. Reason being that there is a US Federal Law that RCCL MUST comply with prohibiting booking of Accessible Cabins by individuals that do not have a disability and or mobility disability that does not require the features of an accessible cabin prior to the final payment period. Once final payment period has past than RCCL is permitted to release all non sold Accessible Cabins for general booking.

You statement "They told me that we could be bumped if it was needed and I told my TA to see if they can put it in the notes that I would prefer it so that we don't keep someone who needs that kind of room from cruising" is somewhat confusing. By having stated "I told my TA to see if they can put it in the notes that I would prefer it " implies that you would prefer not to be moved regardless of the fact that you stated " so that we don't keep someone who needs that kind of room from cruising." Perhaps that wasn't your intention ?

Generally speaking the bathroom and closet is what Able Body Individuals complain about in an Accessible cabin . The bathroom has a zero threshold shower meaning there is no step over edge that prevents water from spilling out to onto the entire bathroom floor partially if the ship is really rocking. Also there is no under sink shelf for storage. The sink tends to be lower to accommodate someone using a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

The closet can vary between ships. Sometimes the closet will have a top pole that has a bar that can be used to pull it down so that someone in a wheelchair or mobility scooter can reach it. Other times there are only lower poles so hanging pants straight legged rather than folded over a hanger, dresses and skirts can be a challenge.

Yes I am disabled and do required the use of an Accessible Cabin or cannot cruise but will not flame you. Rather only suggest that you keep checking standard cabins to see if something else becomes available thus not requiring the need for an Accessible Cabin.

I was in an Accessible Cabin (changed to it a week or two before sailing because it was still available) on Navigator. I don't know if the shower is the same on Oasis, but I'll share my experience.

We did have a zero-threshold shower, but the water did NOT get all over the bathroom floor, because the entire shower threshold (two sides of the square) were made up of a 6" wide floor drain. All the water from the shower flowed into the drain and never went any further into the rest of the bathroom.

Once final payment period has past than RCCL is permitted to release all non sold Accessible Cabins for general booking. Final payment has not been made but you are somewhat incorrect. The TA and a rep from RCCL said during a conference call when I made the change that they release these accessible cabins when all other cabins in that category are sold out, NOT all on the ship.

I do not know how else to say this but you are absolutely misunderstanding this statement. "I would prefer it" means it they bump me then I'm happy because "I prefer it". Sorry if that makes no sense to you.

Thank you for your input on the cabin differences! I appreciate it.

Thank you! That's good to know. Maybe I'll just have the room attendant leave a couple extra floor towels to put around the shower area if it makes it's way out onto the floor. With it being the Oasis, I don't think the ship will do much rocking so hopefully it will be a non-issue.

Sailor05,

I've had that exact room recently on the Oasis. The room is HUGE, the closet is big enough to rent out as a guest room. You could easily put 4 or 5 people in there. There's also an automatic door opener inside the room to keep the door open for wheel chairs to get in and out of easily. Huge balcony as well and a ton of storage space. The shower is flat and has the slotted drain on the floor. We built a barricade with towels every am to catch the extra water. The toilet is also raised so it's different than a normal toilet. Great room, great size but the location can be noisy because it's directly under the pool deck on deck 15. There are 2 js accessible cabins and they're across from each other. 1 on the port side and 1 on the starboard.

Good luck

We are in Central Park Balconies, not JS which I think is what you're talking about? I bet the JS accessible cabins are huge. Yep, I already thought about the towel barricade so I'm glad to know it works good. I'm concerned about the noise, but I assume that would be during the day and by bed time I hope it's quieter.

We were in an accessible room on Floor 14. The room is bigger. The balcony is bigger and has a ramp. the bathroom had a roll in shower and handrails. The closet has a bar you can pull down to access your clothing. If you have any specific questions, I'll be glad to answer them. We could hear the zip line land right by our balcony, but it was not bad when the door was shut.
