Celebrity is revamping its entertainment

Just this morning a cruise friend told me she is sticking with princess until X gets their entertainment back. So..after watching what appears to be big cuts over the last four years I am cautiously optimistic.

 

We used to attend all the shows but they became not good enough to see so frequently.

Yes, the word "risqué" will get people's attention and stir debates. Clearly many people, as illustrated on this thread, have varied opinions for what "best" (or NOT) to be used as ship entertainment.

 

On a recent cruise, the cruise director noted that comedians can be challenging as the tastes between different audiences (such as those from the USA versus those from the UK) are so totally different. A joke that works for the Brits can be totally confused and mis-understood by the Yankees, etc.

 

With certain Broadway/West End programs, there is a more "universal" understanding, interest and following with those types of music/show programs. Certain Baby Boomer music involving the Beatles, BeeGees, Motown, etc., can have wide appeal.

 

Not easymaking all of the varied audiences happy.

Exactly why the comedians can be hit and miss, the better ones can adapt to the audience but still not please everyone. The not so good ones cannot adapt at all.

On our recent cruise, people were disappointed with the loss of Sin City. Celebrity Central was dark in the evening.

 

We also missed the live music by the pool. There was live music for the sail away and that was it. Sorry, a DJ does not make it.

Totally agree, Andy. On our December cruise the only entertainer we really enjoyed alot was Jane Curry.

My two favourite lines are HAL and X - neither of which are particularly known for their entertainment/production shows.

 

Best entertainment we've seen has been on Disney and Royal.

 

We've rarely skipped entertainment on a Royal ship, and have never skipped it on a Disney ship {but on a Disney ship I don't have the casino to entice me away from the show :D}

 

But I don't cruise for the entertainment, its an added perk if its worth taking the time out of my evening to watch. I'm fortunate enough to live close to a city which has top-notch theatre productions, so we get our fix throughout the year and don't need to find it on a cruise ship.

 

On Reflection, we took in one of the first shows. The talent was mediocre at best, the sets and production value left much to be desired. We skipped the entertainment after that and we were fine spending out time in the casino or elsewhere on the ship.

 

Even the variety-show talent they had booked, and promoted in the daily, didn't pique my interest enough to show up.

 

 

Is booking the entertainment the job of the cruise director? I'd rather see more or better singers/entertainers than seeing money spent on production shows.

 

 

 

 

One thing I found interesting ... on other ships ... the waiter would remind us nightly of what was happening around the ship, what show was featured and what time it started at. that never happened on X. When we asked, "what is the show tonight" - the waiter never knew the answer to that.

Our waiters in the MDR have always told us of the nightly events.

The cruise director does not book the entertainment on the ship, that is done by Celebrity's Entertainment staff at head office. The CD's job is to schedule the entertainment for each cruise. There is no doubt that some of them do a better job of this than others ;)

Agreed, sometimes you can tell that even they didn't think much of the act.
