We are going on Celebrity Infinity SA cruise, and have been able to find info and reviews on all the excursions except those for Puerto Madryn, Argentina. We are considering the kayaking, and want to know if anyone has any input on this. Any help or recommendations are gratefully appreciated! We were also considering the all day at the park, but have so many other parks and reserves planned, we thought we'd do something different. We are diomg Terra del Fuego, Magdelea Island, and Montevideo birdwatching, so we have sea lion/wolves, penquins and fowls covered. Thanks, everyone!

  • 2 weeks later...

While most of the 80,000 penguins that come to the reserve to mate and prepare for the winter had already departed (early march 2015), there were plenty to see. Most were molting which means they were defenseless since they cannot enter their safe environment, the water. It was great to see the penguins and walk among them - they have the right of way on the sidewalks. The only downside was the 2.5 hour drive from Puerto Madryn followed by an equally long return. Our driver spotted many local animals and stopped for pictures of animals including mana (small deer-like animal related to the antelope), choique (similar to ostriches), guanacos (llamas), maras (Patagonian hare) and two rodents - tuco tucos and the tailless cavy. As we neared the ocean, we saw turkey vultures, pinguinas (egrets), grey petrels, and albatross. Since the area is surrounded by sheep ranches, we saw gauchos and border collies herding. A box lunch was included.

The choique is the Darwin's Rhea, also known as the Lesser Rhea. Although it looks similar to a small ostrich, it is classified as being in a separate family, the Rheidae. There is one other species of rhea, also restricted to southern South America: the Greater Rhea.

The trips that you mention are great, but the places that can be visited from Puerto Madryn are different and special. We went up to Peninsula Valdes and saw many of those rather exotic South American animals mentioned above, plus elephant seals and armadillos. It was a very South American experience and was a special part of the trip, quite different from those other places that you mention. On a previous visit, we had Welsh afternoon tea in Gaiman, which is a rather unique cultural juxtaposition and although it was not a greatly exciting excursion, I am glad that we did it because it was unique and interesting. :)

We returned home last week from a B2B2B on the Infinity which included two port calls at Puerto Madryn.

During the Puerto Madryn port call on the first leg we joined a private tour to Peninsula Valdes organized by another roll call member. The tour provider was Sentir Patagonia (http://www.sentir-patagonia.com.en). We were pleased with the amount of wildlife we spotted, including seven Lesser Rheas. The driver was great and the tour guide excellent. The tour included a boxed lunch which was highest quality boxed lunch compared to the other boxed lunches included on some of our other tours in other ports.

On the second cruise of that B2B2B series we also had a port call in Puerto Madryn. That day we choose to take the Infinity shuttle downtown, visit a local museum and search for an interesting restaurant.

  • 4 years later...

We are booked on NCL star for feb.29th departure.

we have  reserved one port excursion in Stanley, to volunteer point for penguins.

we want another penguin excursion, just in case we can’t dock in Stanley.  Don’t mind doing two, if we dock  in both.
we are trying to decide between booking in puerto madryn to pinto tombo, or punta arenas to Magellan island.......

any thoughts?.??
