First HAL Cruise - Eurodam - PROS & CONS

lastlook - thank you so much for your encouragement about the Nieuw Amsterdam. The retreat cabana sounds like a nice option & perhaps we would consider the splurge!! We will need to compare pricing for the Nieuw Amsterdam with Celebrity as they include so much for us - a great beverage package, spa, etc.... and no sewage issues. I am not holding my breath but curious to see what HAL comes back to me with. I would truly like to know which cabins are experiencing this problem before we can honestly make our final decision. We do book way ahead so it won't be long before we decide.

I noticed you sailed the RSSC Diamond - we did as well many years ago in the Med - our one and only. Very interesting ship with the twin hull!!

Thank you again & enjoy the Prinsendam!

You're most welcome! Coincidentally, we are the same age (61 and 71 this year) and will be celebrating our 30th this year.

We wanted to experience the unusual catamaran style ship before the RSSC Diamond was sold (I think I read that she became a floating casino in the Far East?) Oddly enough, that was the only ship on which we DID have an odor problem in our cabin - it smelled like diesel exhaust fumes and was so bad that they moved us to another cabin!

Thanks for your good wishes - we are looking forward to experiencing the Prinsendam. Again, we wanted to try her before she is sold and the Norwegian Fjords itinerary was high up on my wish list.

I hope you have a fabulous anniversary on whichever ship you choose.

We may have been on the Eurodam with you. I'm sorry About your experience

NA is spectacular

The last week of March lloyds of London was on board inspecting While no expert I do think this pulled resources.

There was also some back and forth about the dog.

They did have a problem with non flushable items being flushed.

By no means is this an excuse. I Just think it may have also been a crazy week.

I hope you didn't pay for it!! It's not a good value, except for those who drink a LOT!!

Someone must like Santa Carolina or HAL wouldn't sell it. DH finds the cabernet drinkable and I actually can drink the chardonnay. Both of us are major wine drinkers. While I would not purchase this brand at home, I don't think it's swill. We all like something different. You have to consider that Celebrity wine is probably around $10/glass for the least expensive, and I believe HAL's is only $7.

Yes Linda, we were on the same cruise with Lloyds & "the dog". Will leave it at that. From all I am hearing from HAL loyalists, sounds like we really had an off week. Hopefully if we decide to try NA it will be a totally different experience for us. Bottom line, we still had a lot of fun being together at sea , enjoyed some great music & met some nice people.

  • 3 years later...

Sorry you had the Odor Problem, it really ruins your cruise. We sailed the Eurodam fm Ft Lauderdale to Barcelona, then around the Med for 14 more days , This was in 2016. We loved the Eurodam . BUT BUT,

we also had a foul, sickening odor in the bathroom, on the first day we called the room steward. He immediately poured in some Pine Sol type liquid. Only helped an hour or so. I was determined not to let this ruin our 59 day trip of Europe, so I did the following. I had a 2 inch roll of clear p;astic pkg wrapping tape, and a pair of Scissors. I cut a circle ot tape, and put it directly over the chrome drain pipe cover the tub and toilet. NO MORE ODOR the next 13 days. Our neighbors also had the same issue so I gave them a piece of tape too. Later after the cruise I found a post saying there were a couple of HAL Class ships built which had defective valves that allowed sewer gases to flow up through the ships drain pipes in certain areas of the ship. It is interesting to note this problem occured in a midship cabin abovr the upper prominade. We sailed the month before in a forward cabin, main deck and hd no such problem. In the future I will not be in the super-structure on this class ship. AND I do love the Eurodam. It is a terrific ship !!
