Formal Uniform for Formal Nights

Apologies if this has been asked before, but we are off on our first cruise in the next few weeks and OH doesn't own a tux so is planning on wearing his Mess Dress (red dress uniform).

Is this acceptable?

Yes. You see a lot of men in their military dress on the American ships, and I've see some on other ships too. They always look very smart.
