Quantum of the Seas April 12th Departure (videos & photos)

Recommended Posts

I went to Cape Liberty in the early hours of November 10th to welcome her to the US for the first time. Then spent 19 nights on her from 11/23 to 12/12. It still wasn't enough though, I had to return once more to see her sail away. Luckily I was in the area on Sunday and was able to make a stop over there! She was originally scheduled to leave at 4pm but was delayed until 5pm. Shortly before 5pm they started to raise the mooring lines. I've seen many ships raise their mooring lines, some from onboard and many from ashore or on another ship. Sometimes there are mess ups but they tend to be a rarity. I'm not sure if this team is new, but they had two rather big messups. The first you can easily see in the video at about 7:30, the bow lines got tangled up. So when the first line got inside you can hear the engines grind to a halt and everyone start screaming from inside. Within moments of that (just before the camera pans to the left) if you listen you'll hear the guy start yelling and once the camera moves over there is no one outside watching what's going on. That's because while the one line was still attached to the pier and the crew on the pier were just starting to remove the line the crew on the ship started to pull it in. They had to immediately stop and release the tension again. Either one of those incidents could have ended much worse, luckily nobody was injured and it seems like no damage was caused. After that though they were much more careful, but I still don't understand why they seemed to be operating entirely off of shouting instead of radios. The guy monitoring the lines was constantly in and out to send messages when he should have been paying attention the whole time.

In the end though she sailed away just after 5pm and a few minutes after sailing they did finally get the bow lines pulled up the rest of the way.
