Formal Night

Recommended Posts

Just heard a story that 80s clothing is on the way back (not sure how true it is) which got me wondering.

Herself and I like formal nights but on other threads some people get really up tight about the issue.

How do you think a Safari Suit would go down, especially one of the ones with shorts.

Reminds me of Billy Connolly talking about Aussie he saw in a Safari Suit with a long slave shirt, spell class with a capital K.

Do the words "fancy dress" mean anything to you? :)

Perhaps then, the word "bogan"? :D

I have a "clown" suit that you can borrow... You will have to supply your own red-nose for that outfit though...

As for the attached image, I can just hear "Herself" saying: "His knees look better than yours..."

Sorry, I just couldn't resist having a bit of fun with this thread...

We have dressed appropriately for the "formals" until our last cruise to NZ last December.on Dawn Princess. I don't like dressing formally and my idea of cruising is to be as leisurely and relaxed as possible. We have gone along with the formal dining for the last 10 years but on the last cruise decided to be "grots

Surprisingly, when we presented ourselves at the MDR in casual trousers, shirt and no tie, not a word was said by the maitre de at the door and we noticed many other diners dressed similarly

It would appear that dress requirements for formals have been relaxed somewhat

It would be interesting to get an opinion or ruling on this from Princess Cruises

as to if the rules have been relaxed or not

That was what I hoped when I started it.

I took my first Princess cruise in 2002 and people were dressed then as you describe without any problems, but have also seen people turned away or offered a loaner for no Jacket or Tie more recently, so not sure there is a ship wide answer.

I assume you would still wear a bow tie with it? Perhaps an orange one, maybe with brown spots? In the open neckline, naturally!

No mine would be a beige suit with a purple cravat with pink and orange polka dots, and of course white shoes with red socks.

Cravat? That's a bit Matt Preston-ish isn't it? Might be too modern for the 80s look. :D

Jeez, now I'm trying to remember what I wore in the 80s.

Was that the frilly era? Lots of flounces on skirts and blouses?

Not me.

I think my darling wore a lot of shoulder pads in the 80s and if flounces mean like frills yea I think so.

It's hard to remember what was 70s and what was 80s but i know I wore a Safari suit out one night on our honey moon and think that was very early in the 80s.

If it was the 90's....those clothes would fit. If it is the 80's the clothes in the wardrobe at that time - won't fit. But the wardrobe would

I had a Toyota Corolla coupe, red of course. It used to go like a bat out of hell - for its type. I only discovered it had a racing head on it after having engine problems - it didn't like standard fuels. Luckily DH of the time was a good home mechanic.

As soon as I read the topic my thoughts were oh no the "safari suit" ...... I will never forget when I was first going out with husband no 1... ( I have only had two for those snickering lol ) and I took him to our first Xmas party with work... It was at the Mandarin club in town which meant jacket and tie..... The only suit he owned was the baby blue safari suit that he bought for his sisters wedding. I never admitted it but I was so embarrassed ... This was on the cusp of them being out of date.... So I smiled ignored it and copped the ribbing later lol.... Except for my 40 year old boss that still wore them he thought it was great ..... Did I mention I was still in my teens lol

Her first car was a Datsun 180B

Mine was a Ford Escort (you needed a bag of cement in the boot to stop it from fish tailing)

My first car was a 120y.... There was a dent in every panel.... Baby blue ... White vinyl roof... Cost me $80 and that was because they had just registered it... Had this huge aircon unit under the dash that only worked when the windows were opened lol.... I sold it a few years later for $70 lol
