Non-refundable OBC and the casino

I see a variety of threads talking about some of the changes in the rules for refunds of onboard credits. Does anyone have recent experience with using the casino to “cash out unused non-refundable onboard credits?” i.e. charge chips to the shipboard account, play some blackjack and cash out whatever is left at the casino cage.

We have lots of onboard credit on an upcoming cruise. It is 4 to 5 times anything we have ever had in the past. After we add up everything we would normally spend, we will still have hundreds of dollars remaining. We could use it up on shore excursions, but with one exception, we would prefer either DYI or independent excursions.

This looks like it would have worked a year ago, but will it work today? If anyone has had experience with the casino and non-refundable OBC in 2015, it will help us plan.

Yes. Done it three times on three different ships since October. The only impact the change had on us was it enabled us to rightfully get cash for our refundable OBCs right at the PSD and use the money for extra tips. We got the leftovers (if any, they were small, less than $50) from the casino.

Thanks for the prompt replies with current information.

I never dreamed anyone could have too much onboard credit! We normally get a few hundred dollars, but this time we get a lot more. We may still find other ways to spend it, but at least we have some options.

If you have OBC from Military credit you can not use it in the casino. We have a friend joining us on a future cruise, and he read the restrictions for that credit and you can't use it in the Casino or for Gratuities. I don't know if this is new or not, but it is currently on Princess.

I think this an example where the printed policy and the practiced policy differ. Military credit is one of the most flexible of all the 'free' OBCs. Tips, casino, cash refund...we've actually used it for all of these things in the past 6 months.

Did you actually try to use the credit in the Casino or are you just quoting their printed policy? They've printed that using all sorts of on board credit was not to be used for the casino, gratuities, etc. for a long time & it isn't really true. They want to encourage you to spend it in their on board shops & tours neither of which excite us any longer.
