deltawanderer Posted May 1, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 1, 2015 We are booked on a Viking ship leaving from Passau on June 7 and going to Budapest. We are flying into Munich (from Vancouver) and staying a couple of nights before hopefully getting a train to Passau. Has anyone done this and if so what can we expect? Any input will be much appreciated! Thanks
caviargal Posted May 1, 2015 #2 Share Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) Trains in Germany are efficient, clean and easy. Book 90 days prior for the best rates. I prefer 1st class when traveling with luggage. http://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml Edited May 1, 2015 by caviargal
rcaruso Posted May 1, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 1, 2015 Yes, the trains are the way to go. Go online to DBbahn, book a Bayern Pass, cheapest way to go. It will be on the red regional trains. Takes about 2 hours. Should be no more than $28 euro for two. You can download the db app too.
Valley Girl of VA Posted May 2, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 2, 2015 We are taking the train from Budapest to Venice after our cruise in June. I found that I got a lot of help from The Man in Seat 61 ( http://www.seat61.com ) He told me when to buy, how to do it...I spent a lot of time emailing him and he was so helpful. Before our cruise we are also taking the train from Nuremberg to Prague and it was suggested that we purchase tickets through Czech rather than Germany because their are rail strikes for the Germans. Hope this all helps you.

Thanks Becareful if you have not arranged transfers, there are two docking areas in Passau, the first is in Passsau old town, the cruise boats areas are A1 thru A5 and A13 - A14. A13 - A14 are a about a 10 minute stroll from Passau Station, A1 - A5 are further away taxi is advisable (taxi rank outside of the main exit from the station). See attached for docking layout plan. The second docking area is about 2.5 Km downstream in Passau-Lindau, take a taxi. Here is a link where you can see the current docking berth schedule (of course may change): https://www.stadtwerke-passau.de/hafen/liegeplatzeinteilung.html?nw=5 Lageplan.pdf Edited May 3, 2015 by G.M.T. There is no discriminataion on German Railways, it doesn't matter where you buy your tickets, if there are rail strikes then it is not just for the Germans it will affect everyone who wishes to travel on strike days.
