jerseyaxn Posted May 16, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2015 We are flying into Orlando and going to rent a car so we can see my daughter for a day or so in port st lucie than drop the car off in miami. Is there any rent a car company better than another for this type of rental
JohninDC Posted May 16, 2015 #2 Share Posted May 16, 2015 (edited) National, Alamo and Thrifty offer free shuttles to POM from their MIA airport location - that way you get to avoid the "excitement" of driving in downtown Miami. ;) If you get a good deal from another company a cab from MIA to POM will cost about $25. Avis, Budget and Hertz have downtown locations close to POM - about a $12+ cab ride from the port. Figure about 4 hours to get from Orlando (depending upon where in Orlando) to Miami. Orlando Vic Posted May 17, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2015 (edited) You will need a SunPass (toll transponder) for the portion of the Turnpike in the Miami area. Car rental companies have varying charges for this, but I hear that Alamo is one of the cheapest. You can check this out. jerseyaxn Posted May 17, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted May 17, 2015 So the toll is different for regular cars than rent a cars?
Orlando Vic Posted May 17, 2015 #6 Share Posted May 17, 2015 (edited) So the toll is different for regular cars than rent a cars? No, it's the same cost but people driving their own cars can buy (and activate) a SunPass of their own or simply let the cameras photograph the license plate and receive a bill in the mail. Miami has all-electronic tolling so it is not possible to pay those tolls in cash. Edited May 17, 2015 by Orlando Vic
jerseyaxn Posted May 18, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted May 18, 2015 Can I buy a sun pass on line? Or is it a better deal to go through a rent a car company
JohninDC Posted May 18, 2015 #8 Share Posted May 18, 2015 the rental car company will charge you a couple od dollars per day plus the tolls you go through. You can avoid this (but not easily :() by purchasing a sun pass "sticker" at most Publix grocery stores and registering it on line; if you are going to be in FLA often you could purchase a transponder and then register each rental car you pick up. Unless you are going to be in FLA often I'd just pay the car rental company and sail through those toll booths.

Cruznjuly Posted May 18, 2015 #10 Share Posted May 18, 2015 Aren't there routes slightly out of the way that avoid tolls entirely? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
