Turn-Around Day Question

We are booked on a 14 day Eastern/Western Caribbean cruise which returns to Ft. Lauderdale on day 7. Will we have to disembark to a holding area on turn-around day or can we just sleep in, getting up whenever we wish and enjoy the ship like our own private yacht?

Smooth Sailing! :) :) :)

All passengers who are staying on the ship for the second leg of the cruise will be asked to report somewhere, (for us it was the theater), your card will be scanned, and you will wait there until the ship has been cleared. Then you will be allowed to return to your cabin. Our wait was approximately 45 minutes.

It is very rare you are just scanned on the ship anymore. Generally you will be gathered at a designated place with all b2b cruisers. After all pax have disembarked except those doing b2b you will be escorted off the ship, thru customs, zero clearance will be given and you will be allowed right back on before any new passengers. You then can come and go to your room or around ship as you please. It varies somewhat by port and cruiseline but we do b2b all the time and it has been several years since we were scanned and did not go through customs.

We were not escorted off the ship. You may or may not be. It's not a given.

You stayed on the ship, in the main show lounge, last December. This was in late 2014 on the Nieuw Amsterdam. The Eurodam, also doing back to back cruises had the same procedure. I'm pretty sure it was the same way all of last season. Unless you wanted to leave the ship, you didn't have to go out through customs.

We did a B2B on the Nieuw Amsterdam in Nov. 2014. We did not have to leave the ship. We had to meet in the theatre and our cards were scanned. We waited about 45 minutes to an hour, then were allowed to return to the rest of the ship. We took a book to read to pass the time.

Thanks for your speedy replies! Does it make a difference that this is not what I think of as back to back (two 7 day cruises), but is sold as one 14 day cruise? I am needing these answers in advance (we aren't sailing until Jan/16), because we will be traveling with 3 other couples and they are already phoning me with their questions.

It doesn't make any difference if it is listed as a back-to-back cruise or a Collectors Cruise, you all will either be getting off the ship or reporting to a designated place.

Only once when we had over 700 people staying on for the second cruise did we get to go through immigration on the ship. We all waited in the theater for about an hour until the ship got down to "zero" count. All other times we had to get off the ship, go through immigration and then wait in the cruise terminal and we got the signal that we could get back on.

Remember that breakfast will be earlier and everything is pretty much shut down by 8 AM so that they can get cleaned up for the new passengers.

In Dec last year, we did a B2B with the turn around in Ft Lauderdale. We had an assigned time to wait in a separate area in the terminal, then, once the ship was cleared, we were escorted back on board. You did have to go thru customs and immigration if you wanted to leave the terminal.

Thank you all for the clarification - this will be our first time doing the turn-around, so I didn't have any answers. I wondered if we may have to exit the ship, then wait until boarding started again later in the morning to return. Sounds like that's not the case - yay!

Smooth Sailing ! :) :) :)

We scheduled a tour during the time between our B2B. Did the land/sea tour of Ft. Lauderdale. Although I'd been there many times it was an interesting way to see it. They took the boat into the harbor and you saw just how immense the ships are.

I scanned the turn around day procedure for Fort Lauderdale on the Nieuw Amsterdam last year. I think that this link will take you to the correct spot in the thread, but it's post #201 if the link drops you in elsewhere.

There are always questions about turnaround day at Port Everglades, when your first 7 day segment ends and your second week is about to begin. I know we had questions, and if you're doing a back to ba......

Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for - I am going to copy it and forward it to those traveling with us.

What a great site this is - ask a question and people are always so willing to share their expertise. Thanks a bunch!

My pleasure. Always glad to lend a hand. The biggest problem I had was finding the correct spot to link to in my Live From thread. We had heard a lot of different information on the turnaround procedure, so I figured a scan of the instruction sheet would help.

One thing I can tell you for sure: Nothing brings a smile to your face more than seeing all that luggage in the hallways at the end of your first week - and knowing that you're not getting off. You might even begin to whistle or be tempted to break out into song.

Whether you will have to get off the ship or not for immigration all depends on the number of people doing the back-to-back or Collectors Cruise.

On our last cruise there were only 5 of us and we sat all by ourselves in corner of the terminal until they would let us go through immigration and then sit back down before we got the signal that we could get back onto the ship.

Maybe if we just show up in our jammies and fluffy slippers, they will speed things up a bit. LOL

Don't joke about that. Our turn around experience in the show lounge got delayed by two women who arrived in robes & slippers. They didn’t report with everyone else. Instead, they opted for some "hot tub time." Security found them. Then, the two women wanted to shower and change before coming to the showroom.

Needless to say, the two ladies failed to win the most popular passenger contest.

Several times we have been delayed for over 1 and 1/2 hours getting back on the ship when a few people decided that they didn't have to go through immigration.

Trust me, that won't be us - we will want to get off and back on again in record time so we don't miss a minute onboard.

We always went into the terminal on our own, cleared Immigration and if the weather was good, waited outside the terminal until the ship zeroed down. We normally waited in the range of 45 minutes.

I know you said this in jest but we were clearing Immigration once and a couple showed up in robe and slippers and the CBP Official ordered them to get properly dressed. I have no idea how they were permitted to get back on the ship to get clothes but they were not going to be cleared in their robes. Actually, I didn't blame the Official at all..... so disrespectful to all involved including their fellow guests.

I'm sure, like me, you remember the days when we waited, waited, waited for people to pay their bills before anyone could leave the ship. It was awful. There were times we waited a very long time. HAL came up with a better system, it seems, as that doesn't happen anymore.

Some people have no sense of decorum. When it comes to dealing with government officials, we are all business and certainly won't embarrass ourselves or others.
