On Location Maasdam

Hello recent Maasdam cruisers. We will be embarking beautiful Maasdam June 20th for our much-anticipated Canada/New England cruise.

Does anyone have any of the On Location dailies that they can share? We would like an idea of the fixed dining times and what's being offered onboard.

Our entire immediate family will be joining us, celebrating our grandson's high school graduation (with honors!). We sailed this itinerary in 2013 and loved the ship and the ports.

Thanks, in advance, for your replies.

DW and I were on Maasdam this March 13-25, on a 14-day Caribbean cruise. I did a live blog (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2181300). While it dealt mainly with the ports we visited which are not ones you are likely to go to, the blog also has some photos of the ship, menus, etc. I included links to the daily programs, which I repeat below for easier reference. I took photos, two per day, and cropped/enhanced the .jpeg files. They are not the greatest, but are readable. Most are on the Cruise Critic photo gallery – I posted some to photobucket, but the feedback was they are easier to read on the other gallery, so I went mostly with that.

Here are the links:

I do have the On Locations for the Canada/New England ports from my repo cruise in early May. I haven't scanned them yet and sent them to the site that can no longer be named. As the documents are large, I'm not sure that I will be able to post them here but I can try. Please let me know which ports you'll be going to so I can pull those ones out and give you only those. I won't be able to scan them until tomorrow morning at the earliest (I've sent myself an email to remember to bring them to the office!).

I will tell you to make sure, if it's offered on your cruise, go to the PEI Baked Potato Bar (the taco bar by the Dive In). I believe that was when we were in Saguenay, IIRC. They also offered PEI mussels while we were in PEI (we were on tour and didn't get to go). The lobster rolls offered on the ship on Bar Harbor day were just okay. Not very much lobster in them. But the buns were really good, go figure! You'll do better if you get one on land. I highly recommend the Lobster Cobb Salad at the Side Street Cafe in BH.

We just finished the cruise on the Maasdam last week, and really enjoyed it. Some high points:

Use Canadian money in Montreal. Every place in Montreal that we visited, and we were there for three days before cruise started, will happily take US money, at the 1-for-1 face value, then give you Canadian change. They pocket the difference in the value of the currency (CAN vs USA). Everywhere else along the cruise ports in Canada, they calculated the exchange rate FIRST, then gave us a square deal. But not Montreal.

Also be prepared for rude shopkeepers, arrogant waiters, etc in Montreal. It must be a regional thing, because everywhere else, the people were delightful.

I have only great things to say about the Maasdam. It's a fine ship, with a great crew. The food was very good, the shows were top notch. I love the fact that you can go to the prow (front) of the ship while underway.

I do agree that one should use the currency of the country being visited. On our cruise, in Quebec City, our US friend who had only US cash was taken when her cash was accepted at par. I was mortified on her behalf; it didn't faze her much. When we asked about it, the shopkeeper said gave a BS response (IMO) which was that they don't ask for more USD if the CAD is higher in value than the USD. If one uses a credit card, it would be better for the purchaser as the exchange rate is calculated by the credit card company. The shopkeeper is paid in CAD and the purchaser is charged in their home currency (depending on the credit card).

As for Montreal, our experience was quite different than yours. I have nothing but good to say about the taxi drivers, wait staff and shopkeepers there. Just make sure taxi drivers turn off their meters before unloading luggage!

We will visit Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, Quebec City, and end in Montreal. I followed your 'Live From' on your repo cruise and enjoyed every word! Thanks so much for posting and sharing your thoughts on the cruise. I hope that you and your DM have recovered from the Noro that you suffered through.

Kindest regards,

Kindest regards,

I just scanned the On Locations but they're too large to attach here. Frankly, I don't know how to reduce them. Can you provide your email address and I'll send them to you? They're 1 MB each. I've also sent all of the On Locations from our cruise to the site that can't be named but I'm sure it will take a couple of days before they're posted there.

We have both recovered from the noro or whatever it was; thank you for your kind thoughts. And I'm glad you enjoyed the thread. Sorry I never got any pictures posted, not that I took many. It's been a bit of a gong show since we got home!

For anyone else who wishes to see the On Locations, the entire set for the repo cruise is now on the site that can't be named. If you don't know what I mean, try googling something like HAL stateroom photos. On the FACTual site that should come up first, you'll find the On Locations under the General Info Tab. About half way down the page, you'll find the link to various On Location brochures. Under Canada/New England, you'll find the May/15 On Locations.
