Breakaway Return to NY

the ship is usually docked and tied to the terminal (pier 88) between 7:30 and 7:45ish. A little after 8, the ship is cleared to start the debark process and self debark can start as early as 8:15

last call to get the ship is around 10

How long does it typically take to get off the ship if its scheduled to arrive back at NY at 8 a.m.? Are there often delays or is it pretty accurate?

It depends--I'm sure some would tell you they got off in short order. Especially those who choose to self-debark. We weren't so lucky when we sailed on the BA (Jan., 2014). Even though the ship was tied up pretty much on schedule, there was a major back-up getting off the ship and think it was nearly 11 am before we got into the terminal to claim our bags. Hopefully, that time for us was a fluke and you'll have no problem.

We've docked twice with no problems, and once when it took FOREVER to get off of the ship. If you are in a hurry, after you get off of the ship, grab a porter before customs. You will be put on a shorter customs line, well worth the $.

It can depend. This past February the President's Week cruise was delayed due to Customs only sending half the required agents to the pier. The year before we were off without any problems by 10am. So while it seems to usually go off without a hitch, there are problems that can and do pop up.

In my experience 1x Jewell. 1xgem 1x ba

If you do self walk off with your own luggage .... The earlier the better

Pack light and handle it yourself and you will be a happy camper

Disclaimer: we are entering the busiest most crowded ( think all berths in use) family travel time of year.....

So basically ymmv. Lol

Got back on Breakaway yesterday and we were literally off ship (self walk-off with luggage) by about 8:15am. Most painless disembark ever in 12 cruises. I am sure it isn't always that way, but it was this week!

I'm traveling from Boston and will need to get to Penn station for a 10 a.m. train. Should I change that? I haven't finalized it.

You will probably make it but if there is an 11 am train go for that

We only made a flight with 5 mins to check in closure as we docked late in NYC due to a medivac at sea. Customs only had 4 people on so it took us until 11.30 to get off and that was suite priority. If we'd have walked our own bags and got in line early we would have been off faster. Just a total of unfortunate events

It really really helps to do self walk off

Pack light and get off ASAP if there are transportation concerns!!!

Use logical thinking here folks and you will be fine

Assuming no medical or port or weather issues for the ship of course

We were on the BA a few weeks ago. We decided against self-disembarkation due to some of the stories I had read online. We had previously done so with the Dawn but there are more passengers on the BA. The color we selected was to disembark at 9:15am. We made the right decision. There were so many people trying to self disembark that there were lines wrapped around the casino. There was a lack of information or staff to direct people. What a mess! We finally got in line about 9:30 and instead of waiting on a very long line with bags we were able to move quickly off the ship and had very minimal waits at Customs. It saved a lot of aggravation!

My options for an affordable return train home were 10 a.m. or 5 p.m., so we switched it to the 5 p.m. Its my husband and I and our 5 year old daughter. So we will now have time to kill. Will Amtrak hold our bags at Penn Station or can you not check those in til closer to train departure?

I don't think pax realize that self debark means anytime after the start time

Even without those colored tags you still can just walk off as they don't really want you hanging around do they? They are certainly not going to force you to stay aboard. Lol

Self debark is best as early as possible....skip breakfast...be fully packed and ready to leave by 7 am and just walk off It works. It doesn't work as smoothly though if you wait

No need to waste time on breakfast if you are in a hurry

Alternately.... Take your time...eat...relax....and get off whenever you want....in that scenario the later the better.

It depends if they have redcaps or not. I'm not sure pen station does. Google it. If they do find one, they take your bags and also get you into the train before everyone else for a tip.

There are several options to pay for a bag check for the day around town. Cost is typically $10 per bag and then you can wander around not dragging luggage. Guest services on ship will print you out contact info and locations for these services.

I would get a later train. Sometimes its not the actual disembarking. We had a medical emergency during the trip and it made us late getting into port. Be safe and make it a little later. If you make it later and you get there early can you use your ticket for an earlier train?
