Any advice or suggestion for Trondheim and Bodo , for walking around town on our own with a short stop for lunch?

The ship also stop at Hjorundfjorden anchor off shore , any one familiar with this port?

When dock at a port for between 30 and 60 minutes does many passengers get off and make a quick walk into town and back.

Do they scan your card when exiting and returning to the ship.

Sorry for all the question, first time sailing on Hurtigruten.

Thank You

We took the ship's tour of Trondheim the first time we visited as there was a lot of snow and ice on the ground and we thought it would be easier getting around, especially for the view over Trondheim. The second time we walked into town. Not too far and plenty to see in the time available. Make sure you head for the correct ship when you return: there were two very similar ships in port when we were there!

We were not in Bodo for very long so took a walk to the church and bought a snack in the small shopping centre. We were drenched on the way back to the ship in some very heavy horizontal rain that appeared with little warning.

Yes, many take the opportunity to take a brief walk into town. Sometimes not even as far as that. It gives a better insight into what you can see from the ship. It also helps renew your 'land legs' by walking on a surface that isn't moving!

Every time. Off and on. Your card is the solution to everything on board.

We were "rained out" of Trondheim both northbound and southbound, so didn't get very far from the ship. We wanted to walk up to the Royal Palace and gardens. Others, braver, made it to the cathedral and said it was quite impressive.

In Bodo we easily walked along the main street, went to a couple of grocery stores searching for spices and also found a book store with lovely posters.

Confirming what others have said: Your card is scanned on and off the ship every time; many people go ashore and walk around the towns, many even for a short walk in a brief stop.

As for Hjorundfjorden, not sure it's the same place but the fist full day out of Bergen we took an excursion to Hjorundfjord, a very picturesque fjord with a stop at an old historic inn with links to royalty where we were served local foods: a meat soup and special cheese, bread and butter, plus taken up the hillside to glacier views and other views with guided interpretation. Our ship anchored in the fjord and we tendered over to the shore to the dock, were met by our guide and taken by bus for a couple of hours of sightseeing and foods, then back to the ship which waited for us. My memory is that it was about $160 for the two of us and I felt it was rather dear but I'm still glad I did it as it was a quite enjoyable and unique experience.

Enjoy! m--

Thank you all, for the information, will be very helpful.

Have to remember to take along an umbrella when we go to shore.

Will definitely take a quick walk when dock at a couple smaller port.

We are also looking at the shore excursion for Hjorundfjord, in Canadian funds it is a bit more expensive for the two of us $250.00 which is about $200 USD.

Having book yet, otherwise not much else , the closet village of Urke apparently is very small population about 50-60.

The point of Hjorundfjord is actually the fjord sailing. It is the only point in the trip when you will sail inside a real, picture-perfect fjord (not that the rest of the landscapes are bad). The excursion in Urke is an added bonus but be sure to enjoy the sailing in and out of the fjord.

We took this excursion the first year it was offered and really enjoyed it. A stop was made for lunch at a delightful old inn, but I am not sure if this is still part of the excursion. This excursion was begun because the fjord excursion into the Geiranger ends about 1 September and people really wanted a chance to experience one of the beautiful fjords into the Fall.

Just came back from the round trip Bergen-Kirkenes trip on the Trollfjord. In Bodo, both the excursion to the air museum and the trip out to the maelstrom were popular. I took the latter and we had a nice drive around town, then out to the maelstrom with beautiful views, and a picturesque drive back into town.

In Trondheim I took the trip that combined the cathedral with the musical instrument museum. I can recommend that trip. Both were very interesting.
