alaska ports - how far from ship to town?

we have some people in our group that can't walk far. wondering if there are shuttles or buses that take people from the boat to town? we will be in ketchikan, juneau and skagway.

It depends upon which terminal your ship docks at. With Ketchikan and Skagway it is a pretty easy walk from any of the piers both have a shuttle if necessary, in Ketchikan its free and in Skagway its free to the end of the dock then there is the SMART shuttle to take you around town. In Juneau 3 of the 4 docks are pretty much downtown however the AJ dock is about a mile from town....it can be walked but there are no sidewalks so most people take the shuttle.

Generally speaking when you walk off the gang plank you are downtown.. All the Alaska ports are very small towns/cities. The longest walk would be Skagway. Unless you are docked at the AJ pier in juneau (I have only docked at that pier once and have been to Alaska numerous times.

Someone with "mobility" impairments, may find the Alaska ports too far to walk. But they are close to the downtown areas.

 

What I would suggest, determine HOW, you are going to spend your port time, in advance. Then arrange the touring and transportation.

 

The problem with just walking off the ships- are the waits involved for shuttles, pick up areas, where to get off, etc.

 

Depends what the interests and plans are? Sure- an option to also just wander the immediate port areas.
