7/5/2015 back from 8 day s. Caribbean on sunshine today

I PROMISED I would write a review. I made a list of the things I wondered about and decided to post them one at a time. I did take notes,

First day

Embarkation was messy. The Sunshine was delayed due to having to take a critical passenger to a port hospital. Glad they did. Would want them to do the same for me, but we did not board until late due to Sunshine coming in late.

we drove from Jacksonville. We parked in the port parking garage. Total for the eight days was $135.00

We are platinum so we had no issues boarding. I did not see much of a line with people on the way to becoming platinum. We boarded about 2 o'clock. Dinner was open seating and began at 6:45 for everyone. Muster drill was at 6 o'clock. We were in the Liquid Lounge. We did not have to take lifejackets. After the demonstration, we walked outside and saw our lifeboats.

Dinner.

I thought the food was good. I had the sweet and sour shrimps. The spring rolls. Crème Brule for dessert. It was late after dinner, so we went to casino, donated some, then went to bed.

CABIN...3120. An inside with picture window on the Third Deck. Rey was our cabin steward. The window looked out on the Promenade deck, so the view was fine. We had a sofa. A mini-fridge. Rey was the best cabin steward ever. She had everything done before you could even ask. Every morning a bright smile. The cabin was handy to everything. Shore excursions was maybe a hundred yards down the hall. The aft elevators less than that. The Shore Desk was about a hundred yards down the hall. Any time you had a question. Wanted a balance of your account. Another fun times. It was great having that access.

AND we ate dinner in the Sunset Dining room. Fixed time. Early dining. It was maybe 150 yards down the hall.

My husband went out on deck a lot. We saw few people there except when coming into ports. It was a smoking area, but I never saw anyone smoking out there. He enjoyed meeting and talking to other folks out there. If I needed him, all I had to do was knock on the glass. Those cabins are a good deal.

I will post more tomorrow.

One thing I learned from this board.

THE FIFTH DECK IS ALWAYS YOUR FRIEND.

Someone posted that.

It is SO true.

there are three elevators on the Fifth Deck, It is the one deck you can walk straight through to all other decks like the Marketplace and the Havana Bar on the NInth Deck. We always went up to the Fifth deck. past the shops. through the Casino. Past the Ocean Plaza where the Trivia games were held, past the Alchemy bar to the elevators. Those took you straight up to the Havana Bar.

First thing I noticed on First Day. I had read a lot of reviews about how crowded the ship was to some guests. And this cruise was sold out.

I never felt that I was in a crowd. Or no more than any other ship. We did not swim or lay out in the sun. I did see the pool, and it was packed solid. Why did they not put another pool on that ship? but I saw empty chairs every time we went up to the lido which was lunch every day and most mornings for breakfast. I can also say that the bacon police were not on duty. My husband, who is not fat, and usually follows a very sensible diet must have consumed an entire pig. He ate bacon with eggs. Which they fry for you in the Havana Bar. He ate bacon with peanut butter on toast. It is going to be hard for him to go back to his whole wheat cereal breakfast.

O.K. Other than when fighting past the photographers on formal night and that is on every Carnival Ship. no big crowds noted. OK..swimming pool looked packed solid. Other than that. Not an issue.

I promised I would be honest, and I have been.

Most surprising thing on first day

Not that many children or the best behaved children in the world were on the Sunshine. NEVER saw ANYONE have an issue with an unruly child, or a group of rowdies or even crying babies. VERY few babies on board.

I was on same cruise and that's an accurate report. On night one it was open seating everywhere with no wait. Night two was elegant and we were anytime dining. That was longest wait time. About 30 minutes. Sunshine is probably a Ship to consider a fixed dining time. Btw. Im jealous you got to be in liquid lounge for muster drill. Way to crowded on the decks for muster. We were zone C which was let go later too! But all in all a great cruise. How was Deck 3 for motion on the way to Aruba?? We were on Deck 6.

We were also on the sailing that got back today and we had a great time. I too have no idea what is all the fuss about the ship being overcrowded. We sailed full and this ship wasn't anymore crowded than the other 7 previous cruises I've gone on. And Grand Turk has to be the most fun stop of all ports! Also, Jamie Dee is the most energetic CD I have ever seen. She was all over the ship leading all kinds of activities!

Great review AmberTeka and sorry for hijacking your review but it was a great cruise and great ship!

We are sailing on sunshine 9/6 and just found out she will be on vacation the week we sail. So disappointed because I've heard great things about her. Glad you had a great cruise.

She was scheduled to be off last week. It was her birthday but the other CD was let go. I don't know who the person was but that was what was told to us on the ship. She really does have awesome high energy.

I was very, very seasick when we hit the rough waters. I started taking Bonime(hope I have that spelled right), which my doctor recommended. Again, on these boards I had read one review where it was noted that ship movement was noticeable in those wonderful deck three cabins. They were over the counter. I took one pill the next morning, then half a pill in the morning and another half in the evening for the rest of the cruise.( nurse had told me to take them that way.). I was soon back to eating like a horse. I just weighed. I gained 2 and a half pounds. With all of the eating I did, all of the walking I did must have made it not worse.

SO if you are lucky enough to book one of those wonderful cabins, and if you have ever been seasick, you might want to call your doctor and ask what sea sick magic can you take JUST in case the seas get rough. Or being so far aft..the motion is greater.

Glad you asked that question. Having those pills made my cruise a delight, instead of being sick all the time.

One thing I have to post before I dig out my notes for the second day is a very nice thing that happened to me during the muster drill.

My husband and I were sitting sort of near the front. I was concerned with having to climb stairs fast, as I do have some mobility issues. MUCH better thanks to weight loss and wonderful new medicines our scientists keep developing, so no whining. but I was whining a little to my husband.

KEVIN, who is one of the wonderful dancers and a great singer with the Entertainment staff came over to where we were sitting. He sat down. Held my aged hand. Promised me that going to our lifeboat would not be a challenge. He asked me if I was going to come see the production shows. I promised I would see every one of them. I did. And I will tell you some about all of them. They were very good. Kevin was always great.

I even drug my husband to two of the shows. Again............on theater crowding. I admit I did go line up half an hour before the show. The doors opened almost half an hour pre show to the second. I always had a seat very close to the front. I took a paperback book and read until the show started, or chatted with the people around me. I only saw no empty seats ONE time.( Right before the show actually started.) That was the last night. EPIC ROCK. Other than that ( at the 9:15 show) I always saw empty seats in the balcony. ( you enter from that magical deck, the 5th deck, again, to get the balcony seats.) It is smaller than the big Carnival ships a lot of us are used too, but the crowds seemed no bigger. They may have been at the 7:15 showing.

LOOK for the seats behind the curved table and seats. There are about four groups of them tucked away behind the big ones. (Against the wall behind all of the big curved sectional tables and seats) BRING A sweater. It is COLD in there. Or at least on the left hand side which is where I always sat. I did not see them until they were literally right on top of me. Very nice seats.

Before I forget it, I am going to post about the Captain's party for the Seniors and Diamonds. there has been a lot of discussion on that topic, so I threatened my husband with making him watch more CNN until he escorted me.

It was held at four o'clock in the afternoon and lasted for one hour. It was on the last Sea Day. We received the invitations the night before. It was cruise casual. I did not see anyone really dressed up. Most were in Sea Day attire. Shorts. Comfortable dressed. The gents in shorts or casual slacks or jeans. I liked that.

Drinks served at first were a fruity orange punch that was good and loaded with liquor. As everyone of the meds I take warn me not to mix with alcohol, I asked for a glass of white wine ( which I can occasionally have, and which I love). My husband decided to ask for a Martini. No problem. Other people were requesting beer, other cocktails, etc. LOTS of waiters. YOU could have drunk yourself silly in there.

The appetizers were Sushi. A cream cheese tartlet. a sea food crab cake type little patty. That is what we were served. Honestly, I did not like any of them. The wine. Wonderful. The Martini...wonderful.

The Program was Jamie Dee talking. Showing a video of all of the Carnival Ships. I think they were giving double onboard credit if you booked the VISTA at that party. I am still kicking my fanny that I did not get over there. I think Half deposits and double OBC. Some one else at the party will hopefully confirm that or I had it wrong. If they do that at your party........something to consider.

All of the Ship Officers were introduced. The captain gave a very nice, short speech. Then all of the diamonds went on stage. About 25 of them or more. Some dancing. Then music. Jamie Dee threw necklaces to the group. One of the activities staff, Gemma, who had lead some of the trivia's we had done. came over to our side and threw some so that even the dippy catchers (me) could get a memento. Very sweet and thoughtful, I thought.

Crowd. NONE. Very few balcony seats were occupied. Middle was full. Side curved booths were full. but even there, you could see empty seats. It was smaller. It was more person to person.

With no intentions of hurting the feelings of the cruisers who are on their way to becoming Platinum, I did like it better. It seemed well organized. things moved very quickly. We were in, then we were out and we left feeling pretty good about Carnival.

So a good party.

There was another Captain's Party on the FIRST day of the cruise. Everyone who read the Fun Times was invited. I don't know, as we did not attend, but I suspect it was a very similar format. Ship Officers introduced. Free drinks. If anyone who attended reads my review, perhaps they will confirm that, or tell us what did happen.

Amber,

I love reading your review!

We are booked on the Sunshine for next August and I am quite apprehensive since this will be our very first time on Carnival (have done several on Royal and NCL). We booked the cloud 9 spa interior, which seems to be a broom closet, per pictures and other reviews, but everyone has great things to say about the ship, so that is good. Did you happen to go on a cabin crawl and see any of those cloud 9 interiors?

My family and I were on the same cruise. The only thing I would disagree with is the crowding. It might be the ship layout or the number of kids (1200) but on deck on sea days, it was packed! Back near the waterworks there were no chairs at all, none around the pool and I didn't see any available after 10am anywhere: at least not 2 together.

I may do a review myself but will wait until yours is completed.

By the way, do you know anything about the fight that occurred on deck 1 and what happened to the families involved?

I was wondering if you can elaborate on the deck 3 cabins? I am booked in cabin 3115 for September 2015...any pictures?

I agree with you Buckeyefrank, this ship was by far the most crowded Carnival ship we have been on, (there are less than a handful we have not been on). We love the serenity deck but had to be up by 630am to snag a seat by the pool or second deck on the serenity. There was a lot of chair hogging and they weren't enforcing the "40 minute rule" until after around 10am, so those people who saved their chairs and went back to bed still had a place once they got there.

The Platinum/Diamond party was basically the same just less people. No problem getting your drink of choice. Our Diamond party was held in the piano bar about half of the Diamonds attended , good time talking to the Capitan and Officers.

As for the kids, and there were a lot, most were really well behaved. We were on a Pack and Play rate (just taxes and port charges) so no grand kids with us this time, but felt really bad for how crowded the waterworks area was, especially with very limited seating.

Just as an added note you need to be in line 45 prior to adult comedy, this ship has the smallest venue of all.

Cloud 9 interiors are 185 square feet, we were in a regular interior room on Royal's Freedom of the Seas back in November, 152 square feet, it was a shoe box, and very little storage, I think you may be pleasantly surprised. I've never sailed NCL so I don't know about their room sizes. Have a fabulous cruise!

Great review so far AmberTeka! I agree with almost everything you wrote. I also thought this ship was no where near as crowded as the past reviews have stated. It was actually better in certain areas than other ships I've been on, like food lines.

We've never had YTD until this cruise and I was mad at first that we couldn't get it changed, but it ended up being a blessing. We loved it and are now big fans of YTD! We only waited for a table on 2 nights and no more than 15 mins at the most.

The only thing I disagree with you on is the kids. I did see many unruly kids and I overheard several people on different occasions complaining in the elevators about kids knocking on their cabin doors at 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning. It also drove me crazy how they would all sit on the stairs in in the hallways late at night and not move over for anyone to pass. Of course, I didn't let these kids make my cruise a bad experience. It was awesome overall!! I'm also curious what they did to the families involved in the fight. We were told they can ban them from any more Carnival cruises. My husband watched the fight and I say it transpire (I'm the one who informed him there was about to be a fight) and it appeared to be due because of one of the "unruly" kids. My son and friend who are 18 actually had words with this boy on the basketball court and he's only 10 or 11 at the most, so that tells you what kind of mouth/attitude he has...

I have to agree about the unruly kids. We had a room on the Lido and every night we heard kids out in the halls talking loudly.

Also, we saw a plate of food left in an elevator (could have been an adults who left it though) and also 1 day my DW and I went to the Liquid Lounge about an hour before bingo started and there were about 7 kids in there walking from chair to chair playing on the stage and running backstage. We wondered where their parents were.

I'm having a hard time reading a lot of the posts in this thread. I need punctuation and paragraphs! ;)

OK, so I was a little confused when OP commented on the aft elevators being just a little way from the cabin on Deck 3. I had to pull up the deck plans and couldn't find any cabins aft on Deck 3. Re-read it (a couple of times) and decided you must have meant the forward elevators.

Was there another pool on the ship when she was Destiny? If not, I certainly cannot imagine using any public space to add one. And they did add one by putting one in the Serenity Deck area. I don't ever get in the pools myself and just don't see the attraction of laying out, frying/baking in the hot sun for endless hours. Yes, I like some sun but I get bored. I hope to find somewhere on Serenity that may actually be semi-serene, and sit and read.

Were there a lot of loungers out on the exterior of Deck 3? That is usually the only place I can find that's relatively quiet, but there are often just a few loungers.

As for motion/sea-sickness, there is lots and lots of info out there on the web (including the general pages here). I started taking Ginger Root capsules after I read about them when I first discovered CC. It's pretty much cured me. But I still ALWAYS have Bonine/meclizine with me and always take 1/2 on the first day just to get some in my system.

Tell me more about the "alternative" food options like back at the Havana bar. Did I read that there's an omelette station back there in the morning? That's my usual breakfast when I sail. And they have sides (I can have my omelette AND a pound of bacon)? If I can find a place that doesn't have a long line, that would be great. Lunch options? Any charge for the lunch items?

Looking forward to sailing Sunshine. I'm on the 11-night Journeys sailing on 11/28, 1 way from Port C to San Juan with EIGHT ports. We only have 2 sea days (1st and 3rd) so won't get much use of the public spaces.

I Think that the perception of how crowded the ship was is determined by if you used the Sreneity areas, the pools or sat out on deck and soaked up some sun.

We did not use any of those venues. We live in Florida, and while we love the sun, it is a deadly enemy to us if we get overexposed. Seniors who have been exposed to a lot of it already often do battle skin cancers. some worse than others.

the pool was packed. I saw that and mentioned it. I cannot understand why they could not find the space to put in a bigger pool. Or another adults only pool.

We went to the Lido almost every morning. Usually most days for lunch. The elevators we used opened to the deck and then we went to the elevators which were in front of the Havana Bar. the AFT elevators. Mornings.........not crowd. we ate about eight ..to nine. Lunch. Crowded. We could still see some chairs. Not by the pool. and the pool was wall to wall people.

We were mostly in the casino. Not that crowded except at night. Not that many people winning. We were at the Plaza for Trivia a lot. We went to the shows. We took excursions. Went to the Red Frog Pub for the band marathon. (loved it)

Crowds we noticed......and bear in mind......we were inside mostly..........At the shopping areas........the tables with bargains. The morning of the Curacao excursion...Lido was crowded. Never had trouble getting off or on the ship. no crowds.

I did not know that there had been a fight. Honestly. And we were with lots of trivia players for a bit of the day. Saw other people at shows and such. I am surprised.

DECK THREE..........has VERY FEW Cabins. Only in the bow of the ship. About sixteen cabins with windows. and ditto for insides. IT WAS VERY QUIET I thought. NO noise from the Liquid Lounge. Some kids running one night. That happens.

Honestly. I thought it would be far more crowded. But we had read the reviews. We knew to go to the HAVANA BAR. the crowd usually does not drift back there. Omelets were also served there as well as friend eggs.

THE TASTE BAR..........MIDDLE OF FIFTH DECK. WHICH IS ALWAYS YOUR FRIEND. very nice. breakfast. eggs. bacon. grits. potatoes. French Toast. pastries. coffee. water. juice. but NO TOAST.?????????????????????? NEVER A CROWD...it is by the Ocean Plaza. Red Frog Pub. plenty of tables. NEVER saw more than a handful of people there. We ate there one morning and our MDR wait staff was there. Loved them.. REMEMBER that taste bar for breakfast. Send the fastest runner in your party up to the LIDO for Toast........then everything you need is right there. Quiet. totally not a crowd. NO LINES.

they also do lunch and dinner. If I had my way, we would have eaten breakfast there every day.

Remember meeting us in the Liquid Lounge? :)

We did enjoy the Sunshine. It was crowded by our experiences. Still, would sail her again, if the price is right. Public areas, specifically pool area and Serenity, were usually wall to wall bodies. We don't do pools and sunbaking, anyway.

The crew were very friendly and seemed happy to talk to us. Officers very visible. Kids were typical kids.

It was a bumpy voyage. We were far aft on deck 2, great 2 window odd shaped cabin, 2334. We love it rough, though! :)

We did eat breakfast most mornings on the Ocean Plaza, deck 5. Just so easy and quiet. Good coffee and windows. I love the oatmeal with all the trimmings and a couple of pieces crisp bacon. The crew manning the area were so friendly! Even brought me my coffee and refills each morning, after the first day. :)

DAY TWO....FIRST SEADAY--Sunday, June 30,2015

We went to the Sea Day Brunch on Deck three, Aft. FIFTH FLOOR IS ALWAYS YOUR FRIEND. It was easy to access that way. Sunrise Restaurant. Not many people there. We requested and got a table for two. Wound up by the water. Food was hot. Coffee was poured as soon as your cup was empty. Very nice.

I threatened my husband to stay out of the cabin so it could be tided up. He did not. Our wonderful cabin attendant, Rey, always had it done before he could hot foot it down there. I read until Trivia. And I loved it. Sitting a chair. By a window. Nothing to do. nothing to clean. just sit and read. Look at the sea and think.

TRIVIA....General Knowledge and then Super Trivia. which was a week long battle of the Sexes......not groups. I did not like it nearly as well that way, but still had fun and met a lot of very nice people. lunch. on the Lido. was crowded but not more than other ships. HAVANA bar AREA ALWAYS the least crowded. Actually never crowded.

I took a nap every afternoon. I think the sea sick pills made me sleepy, but I was never tired at night.

SUESS-A-PALOOZA PARADE AND STORY TIME began at 2:30. Ocean Plaza and then Liquid Lounge. didn't see it.

Husband in casino. Ten dollar limit to bet at roulette tables. He was not happy about that. He was expecting five dollar limit. It was not announced that it would be changed. Some said only on the Sunshine??

Bingo, dance classes, deck games, shopping all afternoon + other stuff....CAPTAIN's Party, where all were invited was at Four O'clock. on Promenade Aft. did not go. Meet the Officers at 7:15 at Ocean Plaza ( DECK FIVE). DID GO. saw the Captain. did not stay long.

Dinner. Sunset. Deck three. Middle. Fruit appetizer was great. Lovely to look at too. Had the spaghetti as an appetizer. then steak. It was not that tender. Hate to say that. It could just have been that cut. baked potato. Crème Brule for dessert. Very good.

SHOW........MOTOR CITY.... went to 9:15 show. As instructed too on these boards, I got in line 30 minutes before the show. doors opened about that time. I was two levels from the stage. It did fill up but there were seats in the balcony that were not filled when it started. The early show at 7:15 may have been more crowded.

I LOVED IT. LOVED IT. GO SEE IT.

Did not go to comedy club.

Donated to casino. Lost my allotted bit I took. Went to cabin. DH was already there. We were in bed by eleven and slept until almost eight the next morning.

Very nice day.

I am not that much of a photographer. I took some photos of the ports we visited and that was about all.

BUT for photos of the Cabins on Deck three

GOOGLE...........Photos. Carnival Sunshine Cabin 3120. that bought up photos for me

Or google.............Photos. Carnival Sunshine. Deck 3 Inside cabins with windows.

Those cabins are NEW. part of the newer addition. they have a mini fridge. Which I love for Diet cokes which I consume a lot. ( I know. Not supposed to be good for you.)

That cabin was a TERRIFIC deal. They ARE HARD TO BOOK. People who get them often book their next cruise onboard and get those cabins. I tried to get one for next March. already booked. IF you get one. LUCKY you.
