We are booked on the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer Excursion boarding a catamaran from the Solstice at 10 AM and rejoining the ship in Juneau at 1:30 PM Monday, August 3, 2015. Can anyone give us details on what they experienced on this excursion?

Great excursion, we did it last year. You will board the Catamaran while the ship is stopped at Sawyer Glacier. The boat gets much closer to the glacier and then heads back towards Juneau. On the way we went up an inlet to the other Sawyer Glacier which the ship can't get into. While heading back we saw a lot of whales, stopped some areas as close as we could to them. Wife and I enjoyed the trip very much, saw lots of wildlife.

Indoor and outdoor areas on the catamaran in case of bad weather.

Guess it can vary from cruise to cruise.

When we did it, they had us board the catamaran at the entrance to Tracy Arm, many miles away from Sawyer Glacier, which was not even in sight.

Our experience from the June 12 cruise; we boarded the catamaran around 7:45am at Tracy Arm (the glacier was not in sight). Solstice turned around at that point and slowly made her way to Juneau. We got with maybe a mile or less of the glacier. We saw seals on the icebergs and whales on our return. Wear layers, it was cold at the glacier but by the time we got to Juneau (around 2pm) DH was in short sleeves.

They had hot chocolate on the catamaran, no complimentary water. They also had food for sale.

We had a great time. :)

Probably depends on time of year and ice conditions. Maybe we were just lucky going end of August, beginning of September, we went up real close with the ship.

That could explain why the OPs excursion starts at 10am. Later in the season it may be easier to navigate into Sawyer glacier, whereas we needed time to get to the glacier plus 2 or so hours there.
