Train from Seward or Whittier

Hello Friends,

Planning on Alaska cruise next summer from Vancouver to Seaward, AK. Planning on doing 1 night in Seaward and take a train to Anchorage. From anchorage drive to Denali NP with Matanuska.

question :

Train from Seaward to Anchorage leaves at 6pm will I have enough time after the Kenai Fjords NP cruise. Probably should take a 6hr instead of 7.5hrs.

How can I add Whittier, AK to my trip? Do it from Seaward or from anchorage? If done from Seaward to Whittier and back will take 1 whole day and additional night in Seaward? or from anchorage to Whittier to do Prince William sound 12:45pm departure and drive to Matanuska for night.

Looking forward with your suggestions.

Thanks.

Have you looked at this on a map and timed each segment + delays for road works?

How important is it to for you to do both the Kenai and Prince William Sound excursions?

How many days are you planing on being in Alaska and what are your priorities?

It is Seward.

The ending 5:30p Kenai Fjords boat tours, all can make the train.

Your options for including Whittier, would best work, on time, with a one way car rental from Hertz. There are also shuttle/taxi options as well. IF you are doing this to take a Prince William Sound boat tour, those all line up with Alaska RR as well. Yes, it would absolutely involve an additional day. You can also backtrack to/from Anchorage- again- involves time. How much do you have? Don't turn your nose up at high one way rental costs- if it buys you a more efficient itinerary.

Thanks for your response. Planning on 7 days on land tour and flying out of Anchorage.

After cruise -

2 days/ 1 night - Seward - on day 2 evening take train to Anchorage after the Kenai Fjord cruise.

1 night - Anchorage - Rent a car and drive to Whittier, Prince william sound and back to Matanuska for night

1 night -Matanuska - Drive to Denali NP

2 or 3 nights - Denali NP and back to anchorage.

Does this seem doable?

After Whittier, I would instead suggest you stay in Palmer, which you can allow 4++ hours to the transit with a meal stop from Whittier. An alternative would be to change your PWS boat tour to your last day. This allows you time to enjoy the drive, rather than being a marathon road trip to Matanuska.
