seetheworldonaship Posted August 14, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2015 After reading several reviews about the dearth of “things to do” in Harwich, England, I am compelled to share my experience. While planning a short pre-cruise stop in Harwich (May 2015), I (as many others) discovered it difficult to "find something to do" in Harwich. Quite by accident I stumbled across the Harwich Historical Society's website. Therein I read that the Historical Society offered free tours of Harwich. I emailed my inquiry for availability for the date I was interested in; my date did not fall within the Society’s standard "tour season". I received a prompt and friendly response from one of the Society's members, Andy. As luck would have it, Andy was available to escort my husband and me around his wonderful town. He met us in the lobby of our hotel and showed us around town in his own car. We visited The Electric Palace Cinema, Redoubt Fort, Ha’Penny Pier, The Harwich Mayflower Project, the Navy Yard wharf, the High Lighthouse, Treadwheel Crane, Guildhall and Saint Nicholas Church. Each stop was complemented with Andy's passion for and vast knowledge of its history. We even had the pleasure of enjoying a quick lunch at a genuine English pub. Our day was incredible (despite the rain we encountered)! We saw and learned so very much and made a new friend. Give the Harwich Historical Society a try. (For the price of a donation to the Historical Society – and lunch if you so choose,) you will be happy to have visited Harwich – a most friendly, quaint and historically rich town! wowzz Posted August 15, 2015 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2015 Also, if you are travelling by car, Colchester, 20 miles away is well worth a visit. The oldest recorded town in Britain, it was at one time the capital of Roman Britain until destroyed by Boudicca. There is a large Norman castle, a Dutch quarter and some lovely old buildings. janines Posted August 23, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 23, 2015 Not sure if this is an appropriate question for this post but here goes. We depart a cruise ship on June 19 and want to arrange for a van to transport at least 4 people plus luggage to Heathrow. Do you have any info of companies in the area that do this type of service? thanks, janines

janines Posted August 27, 2015 #7 Share Posted August 27, 2015 turnip eater, I checked the price for 4 passengers to Heathrow on portside taxis. The fee is L185 for 4. Another person recommended, Colchester Airport Services. The quoted price was L129 for the same trip and 4 people. I also read some reviews and all were longtime customers that were happy with the service. I am leaning towards booking with them, janines
