Rome-Florence-Naples -Colosseum etc

Given worldwide terrorism there are very few large public sites that will allow you to carry a large bag indoors. All museums now require you to leave bags any larger than a normal sized purse.

 

A two-hour wait for security only is unusual but I would allow up to one hour, to be on the safe side, if you are visiting during the peak summer season. As more and more people figure out that they can purchase tickets in advance that line grows but at least the delay is just security. Once people learn not to carry their backpacks and the guards don't have to go through the explanation with every third visitor the security line will move faster.

 

Take only what you absolutely need for a port day (and most of us need a lot less than we take).

Yes, some places are strict and either make you go through a bag check or if it is a very large bag hold them.

 

Best to carry something small.

 

Personally in Rome they weren't doing enough checks years back and glad they have stepped it up a bit.
