Naughty room tips...

Actually what is ridiculous is people that can't follow the rules they voluntarily agreed to follow and bring it on ship to begin with. If it were me in charge of security on a Carnival ship, I'd call the smugglers down to the naughty room so they could see me personally break their bottle of booty in front of them. :)

I think you missed my point.

Its not fair to penalise travellers that want to bring alcohol back home from their embarkation port after the cruise. These are often cruisers that wouldn't dream of smuggling but simply like specialist beverages from ports.

For example, I may want to purchase a small bottle of Catalan fruit Brandy to take home before I get on the Vista in Barcelona next year. Because of this new rule that is now not possible.

I personally have no problems with people bringing alcohol on board when ship drinks can be a little limited...especially after taking 2 european cruises where I obviously brought on drinks and no-one batted an eyelid. I actually had a large bottle of Kumquat liqueur in carrier bag on my recent Equinox cruise...the scanner people actually laughed at its lurid orange colour and let me on with it.

Yes I believe the naughty room is long gone

However I can report that next door neighbor boarded the breeze last week and were promptly posting pics of the rum runners that made it to the room

On the same cruise that had our contraband alcohol confiscated from our checked luggage, the people next to us had rum runner packets in an extra pair of shoes in their carry-on and didn't have any issues. Hmmmmm. :)

No, I completely understand your point but I also understand there is no way for Carnival to determine who is smuggling and who is bringing alcohol enroute to the next point and therefore have made a one size fits all policy which I agree with. Since you know Carnival has this policy they are not penalizing you. If someone doesn't like Carnival's policies they should find a cruise line whose policies they can abide by instead of violating Carnival's.

Personally, I do have a problem with people who can't abide by the rules because as a rule of thumb, those same people don't abide by laws either and therefore are a safety hazard to all those around them.

Can't you still buy it in port, bring it on ship, turn it in at the desk when you re-board ship, & they hold it till last morning of cruise?

I will be buying the night before embarking and hoping I can just turn it in when I board and asking them to keep it.

I think once I get on the Vista I will be too excited to jump off again on the first day to go shopping. :D

This is ridiculous...destroying sealed wine/spirits because they cannot be bothered to keep it below decks for the cruise?

I know for certain that many cruisers including myself like to spend a few days to a few weeks before they cruise in a foreign port. It is likely during that time you may want to pick up a bottle of specialist spirit/ a few bottles of local wine.

I wonder if you can contact Carnival in advance and present the alcohol at check in for it to be stored?

I am just hoping they are as lax on the Vista next year with bringing alcohol on at ports as they were on our European Legend cruise. We put a bag of 2 vodka bottles with a champagne bottle in the middle through the scanner and they waved us on. We did the same with beers and things for the rest of the ports.

I think it's a great plan. The rules are clear, and so the punishment should be just. Giving back you booze after you try to smuggle it is only a slap on the wrist, and with the "huge" number of people, and drunken behavior on Carnival ships these days, it's about time that Carnival is stepping up, and doing the right thing.

Actually they can. There is a big difference between someone who shows up with the bottle in their hand asking to have it stored until the final day (which is exactly what happens in ports visited) and someone who conceals it in their luggage.

My husband was called to the naughty room about 10 years ago 'to remove the small Leatherman tool' in his suitcase. He always kept it with his dive/camera gear and had cruised with it for 15 years.

They knew exactly what the offending item was but they would not open the (unlocked) suitcase. He was given the option of tossing it in the trash or go across the street (in Puerto Rico) and FedEx it home for $75. He tossed it.

Btw, I walked on the ship with my 12" aluminum knitting needles, no question.

Yep, right after 9/11, my husband and I were flying to a cruise and they made me leave one of the 2" long little purse/pocket tools, with a knife (blade MAYBE 1 1/2 " long), nail file, screwdriver. I then got on the plane to see a woman knitting - needless to say I was pretty ticked off.

Ouch, that was sad for you and the wine. This change was made during Watergate and the policy started July 9th. You are the first to report they actually destroyed the wine.

I'm confused on this.....here is the current policy on carnivals website and I just called to confirm. Did you have more than the allowed amount? I am curious because we celebrate our anniversary on a cruise in October and have been saving a special bottle but I don't want to risk having to trash it. You may see a nice couple chugging that bottle before embarkation LOL

"At the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring one 750 ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne per person in their carry-on luggage."

I bolded that part you need to be aware of. It must be in your carry on luggage - if you check it, Carnival is now stating that the alcohol will be destroyed and not returned to you. As long as you carry on your 1 bottle of wine per person, you're fine.

Immediately after 9/11 the security pendulum swung way off the charts. The situation today is a bit more moderate.

As far as regulations go, there were many who objected to the government proposal prior to 9/11 that cockpit doors have a deadbolt installed.

Yes that's always been the case. I hate you lost your wine though, any grapes killed in vain is tragic

It is not hard to smuggle alcohol on a cruise if you do your research and know what you are doing, with that said it has become easier to simply purchase Cheers. Yes I am a reformed smuggler and laugh when people talk about mouthwash and water bottles. You do have to be more creative then that nowadays.

I fully understand Carnival's stand point. They do loose money and they as a cruiseline have a right to set their rules. It also should not be their responsibility to store alcohol placed in checked luggage. It clearly states if you want to bring wine onboard it has to be in your carry on.

I am waiting for them to get tired of all the smugglers and have them get off my ship clause! Boot people and they will think twice about breaking the rules. If someone loses a cruise or 2 they may learn the lesson not to do stupid things. Suite upgrades anyone?

If caught smuggling, is there a required visit to the naughty room or will they just remove item and deliver bag to stateroom?

Tips on how to react in the naughty room for best outcome?

What are you planning on smuggling? :)

Then they should do the same for anyone that breaks any of the rules. Oh we sent you a e-mail that boarding is 1-3, and you got here at 10. No cruise for you. My son is currently on a cruise, he read that he could not take bottles, so he brought a 12 pack of soda(cans). He did not know that it had to be in his carry-on. He also had his hands full bringing on their 1 year old. They took away his soda and he will not get it back. Some people make honest mistakes. Should we throw them all off? By the way, I do not drink, but I am tolerant of those who do.

I wonder if this has changed? I carry a pocket knife with me almost all the time, exception when I fly. I looked at their restrictions, and found the information below. I actually have a printout that I carry with our cruise documents to show security. About one out of every ten times security will question it when we are boarding (embarkation and ports), but after looking a the printout and measuring, they always leave it with me.

https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2261/~/restricted-items-list

"Knives with blades longer than four (4) inches ( Recreational dive knives are allowed but must be held in the custody of the Guest Services Manager or Chief Security Officer and must be checked out/in by the owner for dive excursions during the cruise.)"

I am not sure how they landed on this as a rule, but they do abide by it.

We are going on Royal next, they do not have this same exception, so no pocket knife this time.

FYI, I am 54 and have not been in a fight since high school. I don't carry it for protection, per say, I do use it probably twice a day for something. Honestly my wife finds need of it more than I do.

I have never had this experience, but I would go with shock. "Who put that in there" "That isn't mine" "Someone has been messing with my luggage" "Where are my wife's diamonds?"

Although it sounds like they don't call you down anymore.

You have obviously missed the purpose of the thread. No one who has alcohol in their hand at the security check in point is going to go anywhere near the naughty room. To go to the naughty room, the alcohol had to have been in one's luggage.

Key words. Carry on luggage is fine. Checked luggage (luggage given to the porter) is not.

If the email part of your statement was in the cruise contract, I would agree with you. It's not so there goes that agreement. Honest mistakes are rarely made by people who read their contracts.
