orca lover Posted August 28, 2015 #1 Share Posted August 28, 2015 We left couple of weeks ago on Holland volendam at 5 pm in Vancouver. The narrows were dark. We also missed passing by ketchikan. I am looking for earlier options leaving vancouver for 7 night cruise, or even starting from the north. Would like to go through scenic parts in daylight. Getting ideas for a second tour. Also a land portion of denali would be nice.b could easily be extended to 12 days.
Glaciers Posted August 28, 2015 #2 Share Posted August 28, 2015 We’ve had much more luck going through Seymour Narrows on south bound trips near the end of June when there’s maximum daylight. Even then it was after sunset. Only once, on a small ship cruise, were we able to transit during the day going north.
Budget Queen Posted August 28, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 28, 2015 I've transited the narrows a few times in both directions. Absolutely you need an end May/June trip. It depends on the slack tides- so taking a look at tide tables can at least give you an idea. You can still miss it. Have no clue what you are talking about with Ketchikan? Ships do not "pass" by Ketchikan unless they are porting there. There are multiple routes cruise ships can take. Get yourself a good inside passage map that is detailed and you will see the areas. All the ships leave Vancouver 4/5pm. 5 days is short for mainland touring, only enough time for maybe, Denali, and Anchorage or Seward (if you are porting there). Go for as long as you can afford. You can see and do more with a rental car. With any cruisetours- be certain to know and understand every detail.
