Viking Airfare - Ticketing the Flights

My Viking agent said I could expect our flights to be ticketed 60-90 days ahead of the cruise (Dec.12). My question is this: how will I know when they have been ticketed?

Thank you.

The easiest - and most accurate - way is to check the airline website using your booking number. The airline site will say whether or not the booking is ticketed.

When I received my flight assignments, the email had a number to call for Viking Air. If you want, you can call that number and request that they ticket early. They may do so. The one disadvantage that Viking warned me about was that any change I made after ticketing could incur substantial fees.

The only booking number I have is with Viking. Would that be the number to use?

Rita Wilson is my Cruise Air Specialist at Viking and she is very knowledgeable. ;)

This number is the Air number: 877-523-0580.

I paid the $50 per person fee to choose my own airline & flights. We fly end of November; however, since I paid for my air in March of 2014, I soon had my flights and was able to choose my seats and food.

I was ticketed February 2015. :D

Your Viking Air Agent will give you your PNR (Pax Number Record) and that is what you will enter on your airline's website, not your Viking Reservation number.

Thank you! I will call Viking Air tomorrow. I have had the flights booked (we, too, paid the $50 each) for a few months, and the Viking Air rep assigned seats. But I now have frequent flyer numbers I would like to add to the reservations, and I'd like to double-check the seat assignments.

Thanks again; you both have been very helpful.

Did you receive a booking confirmation from Viking that included the air itinerary? If so, it may have the airline booking numbers printed on it.

On my itinerary from Viking, after the airline, flight number, class, and seat assignments was a six character airline booking number. I received a United booking number for my outgoing flight and a Lufthansa booking number for my return flight.

If you have documentation from Viking with you air schedule, double check it to see if it has the airline booking numbers on it.

Viking sends a confirmation when you book. In addition to the Viking number, there should be another number listed within the flight information. That is what you use to go on the airline's website and check your reservation, change seats, etc. You do not have to be ticketed to do that if you paid the $50 extra.

We received notice that we were ticketed this week (again an email from Viking) and we are sailing on Dec. 5th, so yours should not be far behind!

Wow - thanks everyone! I don't know why I am ever surprised at CC members' helpfulness, but here's proof once again! I had not even noticed the additional confirmation number next to my flights on the itinerary the Viking Air people sent me! I went to both airlines' websites, entered the confirmation numbers, and presto! There were our flights! I was even able to change seat numbers. Thank you to the one who suggested seatguru.com. Thanks to you, I got a seat with extra storage room between the armrest and the wall of the plane! I knew about the site but it had been tucked away, out of use. Not any more!!

I don't know when we'll get e-tickets, but I am confident now that I can see our reservations online.

Thanks again!

If Viking Air makes your airline reservations, check them out carefully. They had us flying to Prague then taking a 3-1/2 hour bus ride to Nuremberg. They also had us leaving one day earlier than our pre-trip began. This left us with no transfer to Nuremberg from Prague and no hotel room our first night in Nuremberg. They told us to find and pay for our own lodging for that night and to arrange for our own airport transfer.

We discovered these errors when we took our Viking Itenary book that lists everything as "Day 1, Day 2, etc" and began typing out our own itinerary with our own dates. It eventually was corrected, but we were very nervous when VCR responded to our email that they would answer us within 10 days when your cruise leaves in 3 days and phone calls were not returned in a timely fashion.

Be very careful.

Were you dealing direct with Viking or through a TA? You should have had your advanced air bookings at least 75 days and as much as 150 days ahead of your cruise date- either direct from Viking or through your TA. That is the time to check your reservations, not just before your cruise date. The cruise book comes out 3 weeks prior to the cruise date as a final information package- not just "3 days." Sounds to me that this is a Travel Agent problem.

We booked it directly with Viking and received travel documents about 30 days prior to departure. We looked at the book they send which lists each day as Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc. so we thought everything was in order. It showed we left and returned on the dates they had told us on the phone and on our confirmation. It was only when we compared Viking's Day 1 to a calendar that the error surfaced.

Besides, we should be able to review the documents whenever we wish. Viking should not have made this error. They market themselves as experts and professionals and they didn't even come close.

Don't forget to look at www.seatguru.com to select your seats. It tells you which are the better seats. You need to know what Type aircraft you have (which your airline can tell you, or you can see it on their website). ;)

Actually, if you know your flight number, Seat Guru will tell you what type of plane you are traveling in.

LOVE Seat guru....
