Spanish Vat tax on Transatlantic cruise

I'm wondering if there will be Vat taxes on a transatlantic cruise from the states to Barcelona.

All the ports are in Spain and Portugal.

Yes there will. The ship will display signs when they are required to collect the tax on purchases.

Is that new? I have a feeling that the shops/casino is closed if the ship isn't on international waters. I might remember wrong or maybe I wasn't shopping these days...

They are closed while in port, but the VAT tax is collected when cruising in Spanish waters. Not collected when in International waters. They place signs in the shops and at the bars when they are required to collect the tax.

We did a transatlantic from Malaga on RCI a couple of years ago and the Spanish tax was taken off after we had gone through the Straiits of Gibraltar. I actually went to the Guest Services desk just after passing through the Staits to enquire as to when the tax would be removed from purchases and miraculously it happened a few minutes later. Call me syndical !!!!

Same thing as when the ships are in port in Florida and the bars are open the ships collect Florida sales tax.
