Would like to pick up at airport but avoid going to airport for return if possible

There are many Boston and Cambridge alternatives to the airport for rental cars, but it may be expensive to pick up in one location and return elsewhere. If you are going to return the car "in town", can you take public transit from the airport so you also rent it "in town"?
