pablo222 Posted September 30, 2015 #26 Share Posted September 30, 2015 I guess I should be a little more technical in my writing. In Illinois, we have "Assisted Living Retirement Homes" which ALSO house people who are "independent", but want to live in the same community so that they don't have a big transition when the need eventually arises This comes up every few months. Someone usually lists a price for 'Assisted Living', and says see, living on a cruise ship is cheaper. However, the people who are paying assisted living prices NEED ASSISTANCE. People who do not need assistance (and could be cruise passengers) pay much less. I don't think you can count on your cabin steward to help you remember to take your medication, dress yourself, or pretty much anything of a very personal nature. CutestLittleEvil Posted September 30, 2015 #27 Share Posted September 30, 2015 I've met several people who live on a ship instead of an ALF. IT provides all the needs that you would have at a facility on land. Meal preparation, Housekeeping, and entertainment. The ship is very handicap accessible which is a plus. It's more expensive than senior housing, but less expensive and is comparable to ALF (assisted living) or independent living which can easily run in excess of $50k-$60k. ALF facilities have requirements regarding the capabilities of it's residents. At a minimum they must be able to independently perform ambulation (use of wheelchairs/scooters, canes, and walkers are okay) transfers, toileting, bathing and feeding. But they might require assistance with laundry, cleaning, and meal preparation/set up. If a person cannot perform as above, they will not be admitted or will not be permitted to stay in an ALF. ALFs are not the same as a SNF (skilled nursing home). SNFs house people with more medical needs or that require some sort of continual medical monitoring. Anyone in a SNF cannot cruise alone. A good number of people in a SNF has no business on a cruise ship. I think living on a ship for a while (years and years) sounds great. But then again I have a good 25 year until retirement... GUT2407 Posted September 30, 2015 #29 Share Posted September 30, 2015 I guess it comes down to what you need assistance with. If its just cooking, cleaning making the bed etc why not? If you need more assistance a ship may not be the place to get it. But the cost is up there about $200k for a couple in a balcony.

Nāmaka Posted October 1, 2015 #31 Share Posted October 1, 2015 Do we really need to continue with this pointless debate over independent living, assisted living, nursing homes? I believe this was meant to be more a lighthearted thread. I received the attached retirement plan several years ago. Sounds good to me! :D Retirement_Plan[1].pdf
