Ridiculous up-charges

Nominal fee? Do you realize that Celebrity supplies wine, beers, and/or high end liquor that may be $15 or more above the current $13 limit? In this example what amount would you consider not nominal and OK to charge?

That is the point. Where is the line drawn? 4.50, $5.00, $25? X has chosen to clearly state that the customer will be charged the difference when a glass of wine is more than $14.

Problem solved...

X did for a period of time have a Gold standard or some sort drink package, that even included the expensive stuff, it was truly all-in. I think it was like $150 pp per day. I think it was around back when Michaels was still public and had all the fancy scotch and whiseys etc.

Bring that that package back, OP can purchase that and not worry about being charged for the 50 cent overage.

There ya go. :D

Celebrity can charge whatever they want. Having prices that are barely outside the limit of the package when the prices are completely arbitrary makes people feel they are being nickel and dimed.

I think it would make more sense to make "$13.50" glasses included. Maybe raise the $14 glasses to $15. Make it look like they don't have a few selections right outside the price limit just to point, laugh, and go "gotcha!!" with, which, whether the cheerleaders on this thread believe it or not, is a way that people can feel. Is the 50 cents of revenue worth souring people on buying the premium drink packages? I don't think it is. That's all.

Now cue the same 4 people coming in to explain how I'm wrong and people aren't allowed to feel that way and to use the  icon.

If you want to let a paltry $.50 ruin your cruise, that is your right. Me, I am enjoying myself too much to let a few pennies spoil my vacation.

I guess to you I'm just a naive, clueless fool because I don't let trivial things upset me. :(

You can feel however you want. It does not make either of us right or wrong.

X changes their wine selection occasionally, and wine prices change occasionally. If you buy bottles of wine at home you know that. Also, a 2011 bottle of Shoo Fly shiraz might be $8.99 and a 2013 bottle might be $10.99. The wine makers get what they can.

I doubt X is any different from any other establishment that sells liquor/wine by the drink. Prices are not completely arbitrary. They all have a set markup they try to get. If application of the markup results in a rounded price of $13.50 then that is what they charge. Most do round to an even $ or $.50.

If I have read your post correctly you would make the transition point at $15 rather than $13. You also indicate that instead of paying $1 for a $14 glass of wine that X should raise the price of the $14 glass to $15 to compensate for the loss of revenue caused by not charging anything for a glass of $13.50 wine(or up to $13.99/glass). In that case the customer pays $2.00. That works for me. :) OTOH, the current system results in more consistent pricing. Juggling numbers to "make it look like" seems more deceptive to me than just staying with their desired markup.

I have not seen a recent wine list from a X ship. How many glasses of wine have a price $13.50?

I currently have a cruised booked with the more expensive beverage package. I have done that because we drink fairly good wine, and I suspect most of the glasses we will order will be over $13. If we had the cheaper package we would have to pay full price for that wine or drink crummy wine. As DW says, "Life is too short to drink crummy wine".

Rather than make the $13.50 glasses included, why not just raise them to $14?

I posted a list of wines available under packages, I forget if it was this thread or another, there are over 25 options, and I only looked at MDR and CellarMasters menus, none of the others.

My bigger issue with the Premium Bev package is the limited number of wines available. The wine list has double the number of wines (in the same per bottle price) yet only a small selection of them are available by the glass. Given the huge percentage of people on the package it would seem logical that they increase the choices... but what do I know.

I agree with you here. There are many decent wines in the bottle that are lower than $52 on the list. My wife and I easily can drink a bottle so why not open the bottle and pour the 4 glasses. I would even rather have a $52 credit on a bottle than 20% off and more likely upgrade and get a nice $100+ bottle.

I am not sure why they don't offer that so long as you don't take the bottle out of the dining area or share with someone not on the package.

That's quite simple really....they have a wine program in place with extensive by the glass options, and even more by the bottle. It's nice they offer the 20% bottle discount.

Also they don't want to "police" tables who would buy full bottles and share with table mates. At all my tables me and table mates always share our full bottles of wine. It's a nice way to taste new things and make new friends.

They want people to buy full bottles, rather than drink free off a package. It's no secret that onboard spend is where cruise lines make their profits from.

are there any port wines on the list and are "cognacs" and grappa considered wines for the premium package. Can you order an XO and pay the difference?

yes there are several desert wines available in package, I did not list any of them.

Standard drink package rules apply, classic, you pay full price over the $9 wine value, Premium, you pay only the overage above $13 plus 18% on the overage amount.

Perhaps with the exception of the Domaine Chandon, which is a fairly inexpensive sparkling wine (about $15/bottle at Safeway) that is decent cheap bubbles, the rest of the California list is pretty much the bottom of the barrel for those varietals. There are far better California wines even in that $10-$12/bottle (retail) range.

Agreed, Charles. To make matters worse: On our recent Infinity Cruise, they were out of at least one of the top-end wines, covered by the Premium Package. My DH's favorite Bordeaux was out of stock, on day one of the cruise. The Sommelier told him that he had the choice of one of the cheaper reds on the package -- or to pay the difference, for a wine over the $13 limit. :(

They are still out of Bordeux Medoc! Had nothing comparable. just off the Infinity today. Never did enjoy the wine at dinner. Next time I will bring my own even with the premium package!

"People" can certainly feel how they feel. however, why you ..I mean "people" feel soured on it is hard to understand....the policy is and was very clear....and thinking that Celebrity would for some reason just let the money slide so you would be extra happy is absurd. Really, did you expect something different?

I don't drink wine, but thank you for the oblique personal attack.

I think it is a bad business decision by Celebrity to have drinks charged so barely outside the price of the package when they could lower their markup a tiny amount and have the drinks included. That is my personal opinion, and I frankly don't care if you "understand" it or not. I didn't post it to enlighten you, I posted it to share that it exists. Your disbelief that other people have different opinions is absurd.

I understand your challenge with this pricing, yet many of us understand the pricing and accept it as such as part of X's business model and system. As such choose which package we want, or do not want, if any at all. Once we are aboard then decide further what is worth the up charge or not and drink accordingly.

Another option would be for X to create a third Beverage package to cover this situation, possibly? Even more confusing and upset, if done, waiting in the wings, in my opine.

Then there are other lines that really, really offer all inclusive alcohol, with the exception of the ultra premium plus beverages, maybe they would be an option for you?

If anyone has experienced this, please let us know how it worked?

We are going in circles on this topic, at the moment, I believe.

bon voyage all...
