Weather Difference

Alaska weather is notoriously changeable and unpredictable. On a double-Denali Cruise Tour we had 70 degrees one day and snow the next. One HAL captain used to say that you can have all four seasons on any given day.

On average August is a couple of degrees warmer but wetter:

Bring layer-able clothing to be prepared for anything.

What is the difference in weather in Alaska between late June and early August? We are opting for a triple Denali with the cruise first.

A couple of years ago we did the 19 day Cruise Tour with triple Denali. We did the land part first and the cruise last. The land part is quite exhausting due to the early mornings and long travel days. I would recommend doing the cruise last so you can relax for 7 days.

We went the end of June into early July. I researched the weather and determined there was less rain (statistically) during that period of time. It turned out to be true. We had great weather.

There is a link to our trip report in my signature, with pictures.

There are factors other than weather to consider. June will have longer daylight hours, but most bear tours aren't available that early because the salmon aren't running yet. Determine your own priorities and choose which time is best for you, regardless of potential weather.

Although we have cruise Alaska all months available, we really enjoy the third week of June through the second week of August.

The weather --JMO -- seems to be so much better during that time.

Again -- JMO -- do the land tour first -- long days on the road, train, buses, etc. That way you can get on the cruise and relax before traveling home.

It's impossible to say and you can't even go by weather patterns. From one year to another it can be drastically different. A couple of years ago June was swelteringly hot in Alaska, another year very wet. All that aside, I would do the land trip first. But just pick your date and go, whatever the weather Alaska is fabulous.
