Viking Summer Age Group

Hi, we just traveled on Viking - Paris to Normandy and had a great experience. The average age on board was probably around 60. Really nice people and we enjoyed them all. What I would like to know from anyone that might have done summer cruising on Viking - does the age group drop? Thinking about our kids (around 30) and wondering if there is usually a younger group traveling during the summer. Trying to decide if this might be an option for a summer vacation.

Any info would be appreciated.

I was on the Viking Mani from Basel to Amsterdam a few weeks ago. At 46 I was just about the youngest passenger. There was a family that included one passenger in his 30s,but for sure, there were plenty of other couples in late 40s/early 50s. Most though we're in 60s.

Viking markets to seniors and their CEO has stated publicly that is and will remain their target audience.

I would suggest you look at AMA for a more active and diverse mix.

Maybe talk to your kids about what they're seeking from the river cruise experience? We just returned from a Viking cruise and were among the youngest on the ship by a couple of decades, but we had a great time. We met some great people and enjoyed our interactions with them. If we'd been looking for a lot of evening entertainment and younger company, we might have been disappointed, but we were looking for a relaxing break from our hectic work schedules and kids' activities, while enjoying some history and French culture, and this cruise certainly provided that!

It is much more than evening entertainment. AMA offers escorted bike trips in most ports that are great for active travelers. You can also just take out a bike and ride. They offer theme excursions for particular interests. Active tours are offered in most ports of call.

They welcome a wider demographic and IMO, that can make a huge difference. We are younger for river cruises and VERY active and we have been on three lines, ten river cruises, and AMA has definitely offered us more energetic options.

I agree that other lines may cater to a wider demographic and offer activities that would be more appealing for younger travelers. Since the OP was specifically asking about Viking, I just wanted to point out that they shouldn't rule it out just because Viking attracts an older crowd. We enjoyed our cruise immensely.

I will second the vote for AMA as more active. We've done two Viking, one AMA and one Avalon. The demographic was definitely younger on AMA and Avalon. AMA has a small fitness room and biking excursions. Avalon also has a small fitness room. I specifically asked Viking why they did not put in a fitness room when they introduced their longships. Their response was "that is not our demographic". I'm not saying it's wrong, just a comment from someone whose been on all three river cruise lines.
