Partial Panama Canal ???

Does anyone know if we are allowed to get off the ship in Colon, Panama while the ship is docked there....we are scheduled from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm

There is not much to do but you can get off. There is a grocery store and a souvenir shop.

When we were there in 2013 they had a new area to dock in -- didn't get off the boat, but it wasn't the old warehouse.

Normally you are able to get off and take in the shopping mall that is connected to the pier. Your ship will dock where that small blue boat is tied up. The other photo is a picture of the mall from the street. Mostly the usual kind of stores you will find at a similar stop in addition to the grocery store.

That's why they built it...for cruise passengers....you can't leave and go elsewhere, tho.

When we did a partial Panama cruise we got off the ship in Gatun Lake to take a small boat through to the Pacific. We were to be bussed back to meet the ship in Colon and were told that if we arrived back in Colon before the ship did, for our safety we were to stay in the pier shopping area and not to try to leave. It was considered too dangerous.

I can't recall any other Caribbean port where that warning was issued.

This was the case at Belize City with HAL in 2007 and NCL in 2011.

thanks everyone for your responses, my husband lives in Bocas del Toro and I haven't seen him in years and wondered if I could meet him there

There is also (or there was) free WiFi in the shopping area which is why many got off the ship.
