Cheers changes?

On my last cruise in January of this year, if you purchased drinks it did not count toward your 15 drink max on the Cheers program. (and please spare me the posts about how you don't understand how ANYBODY could drink more than 15 drinks in a day. You're not my mom/dad, and its my liver.)

In other words, you could keep track of how many that you had on your cheers program and once you hit 14 you could purchase as many as you desired and use the Cheers program for your last drink of the day. Has this changed?

It seems like I read a post that you are limited to 15 whether you purchase them or use the program. Thanks in advance.

I don't think anything changed. I think they 'let' you buy what you wanted even though it was against the rules. I think sometimes you will get away with this and sometimes its not but its never been allowed according to the rules

Now that made me laugh.

I am curious though. If in fact they do cut you off after 15 drinks if you have the cheers card even if you want to pay for extra drinks, do they have a 15 drink limit for the ones who do not purchase a cheers card?

Doubt it. I couldn't imagine your bill if you actually purchased 15 in one day. Ouch.....

There's always the Fun Shop. Nobody tracks that. Buy a bottle or 2 (or whatever you drink) pre-cruise to be delivered to your cabin. Then you don't have to wonder whether you'll get cut off or not as long as you're not behaving badly. :-)

Have a great cruise!

Interesting. Thank you for the response.

for the exact verbiage, here is the rules per Carnival

  • Guests may purchase a round of drinks for themselves and friends. One drink will count towards the CHEERS! program and the remaining drinks will be charged to the guest’s Sail and Sign account.
  • Program allows for up to 15 alcoholic drinks per 24 hour period (6:00am-6:00am); once the limit is reached, the guest will not be served ANY additional alcoholic drinks.

I seem to remember that was always the case. Did it ever change? We had drink coupons leftover (okay, I am dating myself!) and they let us use those after the 15 drink limit too. I do think you can purchase once you hit 14 and then take your last drink from the package when you are finishing your evening up.

There's no limit outside of the Cheers program. If there were, then someone like me who buys rounds for the family of five would only be able to get three drinks a day.

Fortunately, all of that is true.

I read that verbiage to say you may purchase drinks prior to consuming your 15th within the program. Once you get your 15th program drink, you may not even purchase them which would be consistent with my prior understanding.

you can purchase drinks for your friends (see the other bullet) and one will hit your cheers account.

it also says

Program allows for up to 15 alcoholic drinks

not 14 and then purchase 15 more before hitting your 15th.

its not allowed according to the rules. some ships have looked the other way to allow you to purchase them. some have not

no where does it say you can purchase your drinks

Nowhere does it that that you can't, either.

sure it does... it states UP TO 15 drinks... thats all you are allowed

No, it states that the program allows for a max of 15 drinks. I am an attorney (cue the lawyer comments) and review contracts on a daily basis. I interpret the rule saying that you can have 15 program drinks per day and will be cut off thereafter.

You say that some ships have looked the other way and some ships have not. Do you have any personal experience of this? If not, what is the basis for your comment to that effect.

I have purchased cheers a couple of times. It was always my understanding that you can purchase as many drinks as you want as long as you do it before you reach your 15th cheers drink. Once you hit magic 15, everything is done. So, save #15 for your last drink of the night!

The above has been our experience too. They started telling us at about 12 or 13 and when we asked if we could purchase drinks, they said, "so you'd like to buy one for a friend?", as they nodded their head, and repeated that again when we were slow to understand.

Things have changed since they first introduced the program.

They were pretty loose about the 15 drink rule and went more on how you are acting. Even when they got stricter, you could still find a bartender or 2 that would charge you for a soda, but serve you a cocktail. Then they kind of stopped doing that very often.

The biggest change that occurred earlier this year is the combination of the Cheers program and the Players Club On Us card. Both now count against your 15 drink limit.

I think it's going to hurt casino revenue, there is no way I'm going to keep playing for 20+ minutes in order to get a drink that's no longer really free.

I was just messin' with ya. According to the rule that you posted, I believe that you are absolutely correct.

I would bet that there is an unwritten rule among the bar staff that if a passenger isn't acting intoxicated or obnoxious they are allowed to sell drinks to them prior to their 15th program drink.

I was told by two different carnival employees that with the cheers program, the system locks them out from serving a drink to you. So, unsure if they can actually sell you one after 15. That is why people buy them prior to 15 as once they hit the number the system locks them out.
