Gammie27 Posted January 3, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 3, 2016 (edited) My husband and I along with another couple are doing the Netherlands/Russia cruise August 20th on the Silhouette. We were thinking of spending a couple of nights in Iceland since our flight (Icelandic Air) will have a stop there! Has anyone done this? Hotels? Can we still book with Choice Air? This would be on our return flight to the US! Thanks, Gammie27 Edited January 3, 2016 by Gammie27
genteelarts Posted January 3, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 3, 2016 We did a stopover in Iceland this past August. Yes, you can book via Choice Air; just request the stopover when you make your reservations. We booked Economy Comfort and got upgraded to Saga Class for both legs of the flight. We used points and stayed at the Radisson in downtown Reykjavik. We used the shuttle from the airport to downtown and back to the airport.
jmlh Posted January 3, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 3, 2016 We did a 3 night stopover 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. The country is very tourist friendly - the bus in from the airport even has free wifi. Be sure to take a tour out into the countryside as it is very scenic (Trip Advisor was very helpful). We even spent a morning riding Icelandic horses! Restaurants have excellent food but tend to be expensive (which is expected, given the location!). Enjoy! TMLAalum Posted January 3, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 3, 2016 We stopped over both to & from Europe last May. Driving in Iceland is easy and will get you to places you may not visit on a tour. Do be careful about windshield chips and volcanic sand damage to the vehicle, though. We stayed at the Hotel Lotus in Reykjavik, Hotel Berg in Keflavik and Eglis House in Borgarnes. Drove the Golden Circle with leisurely stops and the Snaefellnes Peninsula. Icelandair economy was fine from the east coast since it's just a five hour flight to KEF. Northern Aurora Posted January 3, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2016 We spent a week in Iceland in 2014. We had taken the Constellation TA over to Amsterdam and then spent two weeks in Europe before flying to Iceland. This coming April we will spend over a month on the Eclipse and again fly to Iceland for a bit before flying back to North America. We were pleased with the service on Icelandair. We had booked their premium economy class. The actual seats were the same as used for Saga (first) class. We rented a car and had no problems navigating the country. The roads are well signed, and most people speak English.
PSCruiser Posted January 4, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 4, 2016 We did a flight to Europe about 5 years ago with a 2 day stopover. One nice thing that we discovered is that there is some relationship between the hotels and excursions offered by Iceland Air, and the airline - maybe all government run? The effect of this is that you don't need to worry about things like booking the Blue Lagoon for the same day you fly - its like booking a cruise line excursion - they will make sure you don't miss the plane. Be ready for extremely expensive food, so fill up at the hotel breakfast. Also, if you expect to party like the locals on Friday night, things only get started REALLY late!
