Nanner Posted January 4, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 4, 2016 Anybody have experience snorkeling/swimming with a healing wrist? I broke my wrist on Dec. 10 and we have a cruise fast approaching. Even if I get out of the cast, my wrist will be weak and I will likely be in a removable brace at least part of the time. Anyone know if an air cast is a good option, or have a suggestion for a good waterproof cover for the arm? I really don't want to just sit on the boat if I can avoid it. OTOH, I want to protect my wrist, which is still pretty sore. I know that at least on HAL, they won't remove a hard cast aboard the ship. So either the cast goes soon, or I do not go at all. Armedaneian Posted January 6, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 6, 2016 You shouldn't need much strength in your wrist to snorkel... as long as you can get your flippers on. Your legs should be what propels you, so the only issue I can see would be getting back in the boat. Sometimes those ladders can be a problem, depending on the boat's configuration.
CT Sean Posted January 6, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 6, 2016 I'm a diver and snorkel a lot. Either activity, I propel myself with my legs and unless my arms/hands are taking a picture of something, they are folded in front of me doing nothing. Using hands for propulsion in water is a waste of energy.
ABQrobin Posted January 6, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 6, 2016 you never use your arms to scuba dive or snorkel... you propel yourself with your legs.

Nanner Posted January 11, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted January 11, 2016 Thanks for the feedback. I am now in a removable brace, but the orthopedic doc says 3 weeks of no swimming or snorkeling, wearing the brace full time. After that, I can do what is tolerable. I really don't care to have an issue, as this is a long cruise. So I will sadly forego the snorkel in Bonaire (drat!), which is barely a week away. Since I'd have to get off/on the boat for that one, it's probably best not to stress the arm yet. I do plan to try it when we are in St. Maarten toward the end of February, even though a boat is again involved.
breanne.wieler Posted January 15, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 15, 2016 What about a "shore snorkel"?? Eliminates the boat problem - then there should be no strain on your wrist at all? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
