Bermuda Last Week August - Many Kids?

We're thinking of changing our upcoming cruise to Bermuda on the Summit to August 28th. We don't usually cruise when kids are out of school. Prefer relaxing cruises with mostly adults. Could someone who has cruised to Bermuda last week August let us know if there were a lot of kids on board at that time? Thanks for your replies and information.

We cruised the Summit a few Summers ago to Bermuda. Yes, at that time of the year there will be lots of families with kids of all ages on board. Any cruise in the Summer months (especially ones going out of NJ in July/August) will have lots of families with kids sailing with them.

That week will be a lot of families and kids since the schools in NY and NJ generally don't go back to school until after Labor Day. I checked the calendar and the week after which includes Labor Day will have some kids but not anywhere near what you will get on the 28th. of August. We did the labor day cruise three years ago and the kids were limited.

Labor day is the day after you get back.

We cruised last week in July, and there were lots of kids. The ways to avoid them is to frequent adult areas such as Solarium, Casino, Late Seating, Aqua Class, Specialty Dining, Sunset Bar, Martini Bar, etc.

We cruised the last week of August 2015 and are booked for 2016 also. We did not feel that the ship was overwhelmed with kids. Yes, there were some kids but I have seen a lot more kids on other cruises. Every year can be different but we are hoping for the same environment as last year. We found plenty of spots on the ship where we could relax and enjoy.

You might want to post your question on the roll call for that week and see what kind of responses you get from others booked for the 28th.

It all depends on when labor day falls and for the cruise on the 28th. it falls after the cruise they are looking at.

I have cruised both before labor day when there were loads of kids to Bermuda and over labor day when the number was significently less.

Augudt 28 is the last cruise to Bermuda. I have gone on the same cruise the past two years and am booked this coming August as well. The number of kids will be remarkably less than any after the month of May. Also, the kids that are on board are usually very well behaved (more so than other cruise lines, in my expereience).

Disagree and I have done that cruise also. Everything with the kids revolves around labor day as I stated earlier. Labor Day is after your cruise therefore you will probably have a lot of kids.

I guess the difference can be perception as to what is meant by a lot. I have gone the week before Labor Day several times and while there were some kids it was not near the amount as in July or early August.

We went that same week on the Summit several years ago and there were 600 children on board. We did not find them all to be well behaved, and we never used the buffet for that reason. We personally won't be sailing on the Summit prior to Labor Day. We still had a great time and love the Summit.

Totally disagree. One year was before labor day and one year returned the day before. There are few children, And those that are there, are generally very wellbehaved and not in the least bit intrusive.

Do you travel this specific last cruise to Bermuda? If so, the past coule of years? Because I donb't know where you aren going that you saw all these children. Hardly anyone on board under 50!

Sorry but I do disagree, depends on Labor day as I said and have traveled the last couple of cruises the past few years.

The last 2 weeks of the summer are the most crowded with kids. Summer programs and camps are closed. My favorite time to sail to Bermuda is in May or early June. Kids are still in school and the weather in Bermuda is better. July and August are very humid. Unless you have to vacation in August, I would avoid a Bermuda cruise at that time. If you are bringing your own kids, then a late August cruise will be fun for your kids.

We did this cruise in 2014 (last cruise, last week of August( and because of the number of kids, chose not to do it in 2015. I thought it would be OK this late, but there were hundred of children (near 600), many suites with 2 kids (so four people) and were happy we had a suite to escape the kids by the pool, etc. We ate late so not bad in that respect, and not too many at the bars (but some) but it definitely shaped the cruise a bit.

Happy sailing,

Jenna

Been on several Bermuda cruises and this has been our experience.

Did Summit recent Aug 4. Lots of kids that seemed to reduce usual Celebrity relaxing ambiance. Staff seemed a little out of sorts with added pressure dealing with lots of kids.

Big risk is promo of kids traveling at reduced rates. Already lots of families/kids out of Bayonne since they avoid air fare cost to southern ports.

Would not care to do Summit again under those conditions.

  • 2 weeks later...

FYI Many Massachusetts public schools go back the 1st Wednesday of September (whether before or after Labor Day), so that's Sep. 7 this year.

Thus, Bermuda and Canada cruises that leave from Boston will have lots of kids end of August (cheaper to go that last week of August than earlier in the summer). HTH!

And as I stated earlier, the NY and NJ schools go back a couple of days after Labor Day therefore the number of kids will depend on when Labor Day falls. The OP asked about the 28th of Aug., which returns the day before Labor Day, there will be lots of kids. In the past, Celebrity has run a last cruise to Bermuda which covers Labor Day and that cruise has some kids but a very limited amount. They are not doing that this year, the cruise on the 28th is the last one of the season to Bermuda.

NY summer 2015 might not be a good comparison. Many schools started before Labor Day because of the Jewish holidays, etc. It is unusual for us to start before Labor Day. It probably greatly reduced the number of kids that would normally be on the week before school returns. We have twice done the week before the Labor Day sailing. Our week had a lot of children. The next week had very few because the children were returning.
