Little known Ruins

There are ruins all around -- perhaps one of these is what you are looking for:

 

Just outside of Rome is Ostia Antica -- extensive ruins on a level with Pompeii (but dating slightly later). Is that what you were thinking of?

 

Nearer to Civitavecchia are Etruscan (pre-Roman) tombs and a good small museum at Tarquinia.

 

Suggest you also look on the Italy Ports of Call boards where there is a lot of information and other posters who can help.

 

Edited to add: I wouldn't necessarily say either of these are "little known" but on a given day they are less crowded than somewhere like Pompeii.

Astia Antica is the most underrated site in Italy. It is how you described it. But you need to go to Rome first to get there.

 

I think the poster is looking for ruins near the cruise terminal so they don;t have to go to Rome for the day.

 

If it exists I'm all ears.
