lynnek Posted January 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2016 We sail on Britannia on sat 30th January and wondered if anyone has done the same cruise could they remember if there is still a Great British Sailaway and if so which port was it from? The reason for asking is we are trying to plan a surprise onboard and thought this would be a great opportunity.
FangedRose Posted January 18, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2016 I haven't been on Britannia but I have been on many P & O cruises and the Great British Sailaway has always been on the departure of the last port before sailing home.
Heartlands1 Posted January 18, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 18, 2016 On the Britannia Eastern Caribbean it was the last port before Barbsdos, St Kitts.
Sanjam cruisers Posted February 9, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2016 Just came back from Azura the GBS was held in Antigua our second last port before Barbados where there were another three large ships in with us. The last port was Grenada where we were the only ship in port. There was a great atmosphere at the GBS and no we did not have The Music Man nor the Dambusters March. The Entertainment Manager was Laura Bennison and if she made this change of day, she is to be applauded

Paula66 Posted February 9, 2016 #6 Share Posted February 9, 2016 Sorry folks for my ignorance...just what is the great British sail away?
jeanlyon Posted February 10, 2016 #7 Share Posted February 10, 2016 It's a deck party (weather permitting) they play music extremely loudly and people wave British flags, particularly if there is a German ship nearby. You either love them or loathe them. I don't go!
Paula66 Posted February 10, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 10, 2016 Thanks for that. I'm not sure it's our thing either but will keep an open mind! :)
Sanjam cruisers Posted February 10, 2016 #9 Share Posted February 10, 2016 Jeanlyon During our GBS last week we were alongside Celebrity Eclipse and MienSchiff 3, the passengers on both ships were very happy to join in with our GBS plenty of waving and all ships even the German one had a horn sounding competition. As I said earlier there was no Music Man nor the Dambusters March played. Perhaps if we did a bit more flag waving in this country it may be in a better state than it is, we seem to have become very good at doing ourselves down. Gilpet Posted February 10, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 10, 2016 We've usually had the GBS on the last port day as well. The best we've ever had was from Gibraltar on the day Prince George was born - that really was special. Gill
Florry Posted February 10, 2016 #11 Share Posted February 10, 2016 I have been on about 13 P&O cruises and I thought all sail-always were branded Great British Sail-away I had no idea one was different to the others - shows how many I go to! lynnek Posted February 13, 2016 Author #12 Share Posted February 13, 2016 Well I'm back from the Britannia cruise and I now know the answer was Grenada, the last port on this cruise. For anyone who misses this its a shame as everyone we saw seemed to really enjoy themselves. We had A Royal Caribbean ship docked next to us and they were joining in the waving and dancing from their deck. Singing Rule Britannia onboard Britannia brought tears to a few eyes. Such a patriotic Sailaway and I agree with the earlier post maybe we should do more flag waving!
jeanlyon Posted February 13, 2016 #13 Share Posted February 13, 2016 I feel the same when the singer or comedian asks everyone to wave their arms about. Cringe making. We're all different !!
Sanjam cruisers Posted February 13, 2016 #14 Share Posted February 13, 2016 Lynneck It was I who posted that we should do a bit more flag waving, we always enjoy the Great British Sailaway, it is a bit of harmless fun in this modern world and for all those who dislike it I am quite happy to display my Scottishness and my Britishness if we are that bad a country why are so many trying to get here. Long live Great Britain.
